A simple gold band glints back at him from its place around Sylvain’s finger, new and perfectly unmarred under the glare of the window’s bright light. When Felix runs the edge of his thumb across the surface, it feels exactly the same temperature as the skin of Sylvain’s hand—as though, in the short amount of time it’s been in Sylvain’s possession, the metal has already become just another part of him. “You slept with it on."

“I mean, I get it, believe me,” he continues. Felix can tell that each step Sylvain takes towards him is deliberately made careful and nonthreatening, as though Felix were the skittish horse who inhabits the stall they’re currently standing in. After nearly three years of tightrope walking, Sylvain’s gotten pretty good at keeping his balance. The trick, as far as he can tell, is to keep your focus on a fixed point up ahead. Like this: Sylvain’s always known that, if they manage to make it through the rest of this war, they’ll have to eventually turn their efforts towards securing the future of Fódlan. This thing between them—whatever it is—was never meant to actually last. So long as he remembers that fact, holds it tightly against himself like a counterweight, it's pretty easy to keep moving forward; one foot in front of the other, all that wanting left somewhere beyond his direct line of sight.

To pretend that five years of civil war haven't ravaged people and land alike, that the old hearty customs can go on just as they have for centuries, it turns Sylvain's stomach—
