A cute little daisy, twice the size of the daisy he’d coughed out first.
Another wild rose, it’s thorns catching on his flesh and tearing his throat to shreds.
And finally, a light blue forget-me-not, still so small and soft, almost a reprieve from the other flowers.
Their petals are coated in blood and phlegm and Leonard meets eyes with Spock, who looks as horrified as he feels. “Doctor,” he snaps, voice cracking with emotion. “You are badly injured- and sick.”
He blinks at Spock and sets his mouth stubbornly, turning to look forward and steer the ship he miraculously hadn’t crashed. “Yeah, well, ya need me,” he grates out, his throat in agony. He tastes blood and bile in the back of his throat. He prefers it to the taste of roses.

    Summary

It was a joke, at first. A quip thrown this way and that when they call him a rake, a rogue, a ravisher. You just go around stealing hearts, they say, sometimes accusing, sometimes sad, and he can’t stomach any sort of seriousness so he replies with a winking and I eat them, too.

But this is the land of Ingary, where things such as giants and fire demons and seven-league boots exist.

    And so, it becomes true.

    Bookmarker's Notes

His last heart tasted wintery on his tongue, of harsh spurned love and snow flurries with their light flakes, of ice-white stars in the distance and too much iron on cold blood. That one had left him shivering for weeks afterwards; he hates that he has eaten enough hearts to develop a preference, hates that he likes them sweet and summer-bright and bursting with the want to be loved, and so he does his best to keep away from those.

It takes him coming back full, mouth and limbs still red-hot with the passionate heart of a dragon-tamer and sleeves trailing bloody tracks across the entrance floor, for him to fully realize that there's another person living in this castle now. Mostly because that person has just dropped a whole dollop of jam on the floor after turning to look at him, toast half-hanging from his hand and eyes very wide and very frightened.
The guilt comes back full force, which only means that everything about him becomes nonchalant, casual. "Having breakfast too, I see."
And that's that. Michael is not stupid enough to ask more questions, when Howl has already taken it upon himself to spread as many rumours as he can about his heart-eating habits

That’s the thing with warrior races – they usually have more dead than living.
    .
As we watched, the ship flew straight into the sun. Everyone on board was killed. There was nothing I could do.

And, you’ve probably guessed this bit – the impact of their dodgy hyperdrive engines caused a series of energy fluctuations across the surface of the sun, which ultimately coalesced into the solar flares Maine and his crew had wanted to stop. They became part of the history they wanted to change. Predestination paradox.

So I’ll be interested to see what you make of this. Though do remember the word count is only 3,000 and there’s a penalty for going more than 10% over.

    Summary

Sometimes, her prince is too perfect.

Godfather Drosselmeier's single dark eye is not unlike those of his nephew. But in the right light, in the right mood, her beloved’s could have been perfect black circles painted over wood, glossed over in a steady toymaker’s hand.

    Bookmarker's Notes

If his nephew caught any portion of the exchange, she doesn’t know. But the next moment her sweet prince comes for her, sweeping her into a dance that barely feels like a rescue at all. It’s the one thing they do most often together: a stolen chance to press close amidst turns and twists, hand in gloved hand, sharing breath. This one is a slow and gentle waltz around the family room, chasing the few moments where the Christmas tree blocks the sight of them from the rest of the family. Marie leans her head against his shoulder in such moments, pressing a kiss to the sliver of skin above his high collar.

She no longer wonders why his name doesn’t seem to stick, or even if he has one at all. Her family calls him Marie’s intended, her betrothed, her fiancé, or even 'HerrDrosselmeier’s well-behaved nephew'; they never seem to notice that something’s amiss in introductions or conversations. Marie does, but it does not seem to bother him, and so it does not bother her. What worth is there in a name, when all she needs to know is that she may call him my love?
    .
“It’s every bride’s fate to leave their family,” Marie says, not unkindly. Not without pain, either. “We shall come and visit.”
