When the story’s almost over, Max’s eyes are wide with wonder. “Pretty eyes and an impressive tolerance for your psychosexual daddy issues? Jesus, you’re so screwed.”
It’s a testament to the gravity of the situation that Robert lets that blatant blasphemy go, though not without vowing to himself to remember to piss in Max’s coffee in the morning.
“And the worst part,” Robert starts, mouth dry as he realises he’s finally going to voice aloud the illicit secret he can barely admit to himself, “is that he’s my soulmate.”

Robert looks himself in the eyes and feels his jaw tighten slightly before it relaxes and a confident grin takes its place.

Summary
It’s over. It had taken a while, but it’s over. The police had found Mackenzie, and both he and Aaron are recovering in hospital. They’ve still got a long road left to go, but they’re alive, which is the most important thing. No one really knew where John had gone off to, but with the amount of police presence in the village and the surrounding areas in the days after the whole thing went down, everyone assumed he had done a runner and was probably somewhere on the continent by now.
Typical, Robert thinks. John had always been a slimy one, just slippery enough to not get caught, so it doesn’t really surprise him that his brother had avoided police capture. But he comforts himself with the fact that he would never have to lay eyes on John ever again, and is perfectly fine with forgetting he’d ever existed to begin with. He already had a complicated relationship with one brother, he didn’t need another one.
After the gorge debacle, Robert is ready to move on from everything related to his so-called brother and pull the tatters of his life back together. Unfortunately, things have never been that simple.

Summary
He’s right. Aaron hates it, but he’s right. It’s like the thought of it, the mere idea of Robert putting his hands on him, is enough to make him come apart at the seams. It’s a new feeling that makes him feel raw, like Robert sees something in him that no one has seen before, his gorgeously green eyes finding parts of Aaron he’d rather keep hidden.
“What’d you do?” he manages, pulling at Robert’s hair so their eyes meet again. “If we had more time.”
