Mydei blinked between the two of them in bafflement; Cipher looked like a cat that had caught a particularly fat canary, and Phainon looked like he wanted to throw himself over the counter and through the windows.

There was a distinct ringing in Phainon’s ears that seemed to be the sound of his brain rattling loose in his skull. What in Kephale’s name was that last bit? They had drunk together only the once, more than a year ago.
And actually, for that matter, what the hell was that first bit?

“Sometimes," Mydei says, so softly that Phainon feels him more than he hears him, "you sound like you mean these things you tease me with."
Phainon freezes. He wants to do—something. Anything. Shove Mydei down. Drive his sword through his stomach into the earth to keep him still. Kiss him until they suffocate and the scouts find their bodies, entwined on the ledge.
