Summary
Haymitch has barely stumbled off the train from the Victory Tour when they tell him he’s going to be a mentor for next year’s Games.
He figured as much. And, under any other circumstances, he’d get a kick out of the fact that he’s expected to mentor anything. The concept is laughable.
But two kids, marked for death, under the guidance of some poor slob who won his Games by accident, who can’t get through a day without his chapped lips around the rim of a bottle? Whose entire existence is cursed poison, more compatible with death than with life?
He didn’t think anyone getting reaped for the Hunger Games could get more unlucky.

Once he got used to his ability, he felt like he was a part of something. Using his empathy to strengthen his relationships with, and help, everyone – friends and family and strangers alike – used to be his favorite part of having it.
Now, it scares him more than anything else ever has.

The thing is, Kenji also knows how easy it is to isolate yourself when you feel guilty. Darius is probably shutting himself up in his cabin because he can’t bear the thought of facing anyone from his old home when he feels so responsible for taking such a huge part of it away.
And even though Kenji knows that Darius isn’t entirely blameless, he made a promise to their mom, so he intends to keep it.

“I can't do this anymore!”
The words leave his mouth without his permission; he was not expecting to speak, because he knew that any other protests would fall on deaf ears. He was going to play along, and then use the paid time off for the rest of his shift to continue his hunt by himself. He probably should have gone quietly. But once the words are out, Darius realizes they make sense. Ronnie means well, but she doesn't understand, and the type of concern that he isn't used to in a professional setting – the way she was looking at him was almost parental, reminiscent of many of the looks he's gotten from his mom over the years – has been slowly suffocating him. He takes a deep breath, and the air feels different. He feels more resolved.
“I think… you're right,” he whispers. “I think I need a break.”

“I don’t have any mone-”
“Yes you do.”
“Right, okay, yes I do.” Sirius said sharply and James landed a hand on his trembling shoulder, “But I’m not funding your fucking habit Regulus. Again.”
“It’s not a habit! I could get clean whenever I wanted to.”
“Great.” Sirius couldn’t help the sarcasm as he waved his coffee bearing arm dramatically, “Get clean then, go on? Today.”
James squeezed the shoulder he’d taken and leaned over to take the mug from his best friends’ wild gesturing hand, planting it to safety on the first coaster he laid eyes on.
“I said if I wanted to.” he was chewing his lip again and Sirius cringed upon catching sight of his rotting teeth, “I don’t want to, do I?” he was very pale.
“…Why wouldn’t you want to, Reg?”

Mark wasn’t drunk. It was only two in the afternoon, so of course, he wasn’t drunk. Yes, he may have broken open the bottle of scotch he’d bought and kept hidden last week, after getting off the call with Sam (and if he’d, actually, made his maiden voyage into that bottle immediately after, who could blame him? Call it quality control. Call it “calling your ex, for your other ex’s number, Christ, who does that?”), but he wasn't drunk. He was just...prepared.
Before he could think better of it, he grabbed up his phone, unlocked it, and punched in the number. He didn’t look at the paper or his laptop once, just hit the call button with a little too much vigor before he slammed it against his ear.
The phone rang.
And rang.
And rang.
