Summary
When Mike Wheeler is eight years old, he meets another boy at the playground. This boy is Will Byers, a selectively mute kid who only communicates through art. Mike doesn't mind, and the two form an unbreakable bond.
They didn't need words. They could converse without them. Mike forgets that Will's mutism is even considered an issue- he's so used to it.
And then one night, at a sleepover, he hears it. A soft voice, a little wary, like it hadn't been used in forever and was testing the waters. Will's.

"It's your first day," Karen tells him. "This is exciting! You'll make so many friends."
"You think so?" Mike asks nervously, his wide eyes staring at her.
"Absolutely."
Karen Wheeler doesn't condone lying to her children, but she believes white lies can be considered harmless. They won't remember, anyways. But if Karen was telling the truth to her son, she'd have to admit how she's actually desperately nervous about his compatibility with his classmates.
After school, when Mike is rambling about his new best friend, Karen decides that if Will Byers makes her son this happy, she'll do everything in her power to make sure they stay friends forever.

Even though the cold seeped into him, like he was drifting backwards into a freezer, Will didn’t take the way out.
“Take me,” he repeated, his voice still shaky, but he held Vecna’s gaze. “Take me instead of Holly. I’ll come to you. I won’t fight. Just finish it already.”

For the first time, Lucas realises that none of them had ever really talked to Will about the Upside Down. He’s sure Joyce had tried, but Will always tried to protect his mother and brother, always felt like he was a burden on a family that was barely scraping together as it was, backs bending with the strain of giving Will some semblance of a good childhood. Lucas and Max had had each other, Dustin had had Steve, and Mike and Eleven had protected each other best they could.
Will, though… had never really had anyone. Once again, Lucas feels his heart twist in guilt over how they’d treated Will the summer before last, the summer after he’d been possessed.

“Careful, my friend,” Asmodeus aims for a teasing tone, but at this point he no longer feels like teasing. The firmament is clear and ringing above them, stretching like a dome or maybe a magnifying glass. “It almost sounds like you want to keep some for yourself.”

Cooking class was a mistake. Fizz is sure of it when he pulls up to the quiet Gluttony neighborhood the teacher he hired lives in. He had to lie to Ozzie about where he’s going, ordered a cab to bring him here to avoid the paparazzi following his limo, and spent the entire trip regretting paying in advance. One lesson. He’ll force himself to stay for one lesson, and then he’ll tell her it was a big mistake and pretend like it never happened.
She’s waiting for him on her porch as Fizz leaves the cab, the imp’s tail curling around his legs as he walks up to her.
“Mister Fizzarolli, I presume. Come in, we’ve got some work to do.”
Fizz sets fire to her kitchen twice.

He hadn’t really been normal before that, though. His mom would take them swimming and she’d Change, and even though he didn’t have a fin or gills, he’d be able to keep up with her in the water. Would hold his breath for far longer than the typical two to three minutes; he could pop up to the surface a half an hour later without his lungs aching at all. He knew that it wasn’t considered normal, but it was his normal. Both him and his mom. And sharing something like that with her was worth the lifetime of secrets he knew came with it.
