“Over what?” Lucas protested.
Mike was silent for a beat, “Don’t make me say it.”
Lucas let out an exhale, rubbing the inner corners of his eyes, if only to give himself a moment to think of a response.
“It’s not worry,” Lucas said at last. “Worry won’t do shit right now, will it? I’m just... praying. And pestering the doctors. I can’t do anything else and that sucks.”
Mike scooted an inch to the side, his knee lightly nudging Lucas, “You’re doing good, buddy. I know Max would appreciate it. I know it.”

When she smiled, when she laughed, when she merely existed beside him–Mike was full of a joy–a gratitude–he didn’t have words for. He wasn’t sure there even were adequate words in the English language. He could say that he was so happy it brought him to tears, or that things felt somehow lighter than ever before. But those sentiments would always fall short of the intensity of his elation.

Her throat works. “Am I not allowed to do that?”
She doesn’t mean to sound defensive, but the words come out like that anyway. Mike blinks, a little surprised and she can’t blame him for it, but the gentleness of his voice doesn’t fade. “Of course you are,” he says with a nod. Never one to deny her anything.
It sends an aching pang through her chest. He’s always on her side, puts her above everyone else—including himself. He has shown it to her time and time again, proved to her repeatedly that nothing is more important to him than she is. And that—that worries her.
