Chewing on his lip, Shane focuses on pulling his gear into place. His phone vibrates once, twice, rattling the shelf of his locker. He ignores it for as long as he can before sighing and picking it up.

Lily: Did you do what I told you to?
Shane wants to throw his phone across the room. Instead, he puts it back in his locker and finishes pulling on his gear. His blood is singing, pulsing anxiously in his ears and in his fingertips, shaky as they adjust the gear.
One week, Ilya asked him to.. he feels a spike of something thrilling and nauseating just thinking it. As far as Shane knew, he wasn’t a person who jerked off a lot, but he was still a person. A week without it was abnormal for him, especially midway through the season, when adrenaline and stress were high. He’d felt like he was buzzing with excess energy all week in a way that was far from pleasant.

Shane had spent time—a lot of time, really—thinking about retirement. It came with the territory; on average, hockey players retired in their 30s, with a few outliers playing into their 40s. The really good ones got maybe three decades out of it all before putting the stick down and hanging the jersey up. In his mind, Shane liked to think he’d be one of them, playing till he hit forty-five, ending on some high note—the Centaurs winning their nth or so Cup, maybe—before fading, slowly, into the background.
It turned out it would all just end in a random game, with a random team, boom— all so definitively over that Shane was left falling, completely flailing, clueless about any next step.

She’s basically ruined everything: Joel and her are off the patrol roster, and everyone in town’s treating her like she’s diseased, and all their neighbors and friends except for Dina are mad at them, or scared of her. She’s never been a popular kid - she’s too loud and too crass and a little too feral for that - but she’s always been moderately well liked here in Jackson, and to have that stripped away so suddenly and for something she can’t control hurts.
And it hurts even more to watch Joel bear the brunt of the repercussions for her mistakes. Joel takes a lot of pride in being a good neighbor and being active in their town. She knows he thinks that this whole thing - her and Jackson, their family and their life - is a second chance for him, and he’s always been so careful not to fuck it up.
And now it’s all gone to shit, and it’s all her fault.

It starts their first Sunday in Jackson, just one week in, and by the time the weather warms up, a month has gone by and Ellie’s eaten at Tommy and Maria’s house every week. Maria is about ready to pop and Tommy keeps badgering her to sit down while he finishes cooking. They’re bickering with two big dumb grins on their faces when Ellie turns to Joel and asks, “Why do you guys do this every week? Don’t you get tired of it?”
Joel pauses. “It’s a family tradition,” he says, musing, like he’s never considered it before. “Growin’ up, Tom and I ate every damn meal together. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Our mama would cook, so we’d do the dishes and set the table and all. So, food is - it’s real important to the family. You sit together for meals ‘cause some days it’d be the only time you made time for each other. When things get busy, you forget what’s important. You eat together, because you love each other.”

“Porotos granados,” Tommy replies. He sits beside her, squeezing her shoulder as he passes. “Our mama used to make it. She was from-”
“Santiago,” Ellie volunteers. Tommy chuckles.
“Si, Santiago,” he agrees. He says it with a little lilt that’s so different from his normal drawl that it makes Ellie giggle. It’s still weird to her, how sometimes Tommy and Joel switch so easily from one dialect or language to the next. She doesn’t even mind when they talk Spanish around her to keep her from knowing their business. She likes the rapid fire cadence of their words, the way the vowels sound like sugar melting over hot coals on their tongues, the way Joel sucks his teeth and hisses, how Tommy’s voice goes higher when he’s joking. It’s weird sometimes to look around at all the ways her family doesn’t match each other and yet love each other so much. It shouldn’t make sense - they shouldn’t make sense - and still, they do.

Tommy takes a deep breath, and afraid of a no, she speaks again.
“Not a lot!” She reassures him. “Just like-” She gestures with her hands to indicate the amount she saw someone else carrying to Gail’s house when she was spying to get some intel earlier. “Like that much.” She might need more later, but if the lady’s studied how to fix brains, surely she’ll be able to do it pretty quickly. Ellie might be fucked up more than other kids her age, but she can’t be the most fucked up person in Jackson. Just statistically, other people have had more time to get more fucked up. She’s probably barely even fucked up, comparatively. Freaked up, really, if anything.
That’s what she’s been desperately telling herself, at least.
