Summary
When Arthur is asleep, John is haunted. Every bit of his surface area is too hot, too cold, too aching, too empty. John is convinced it goes beyond wanting. Every fiber of his limited existence craves touch and simultaneously rages with burning jealousy that it’s not easy to ask for.
or, 5 times John navigates his relationship to touch without a body + 1 time with a body

Summary
"I want you to be more than a spectator. And selfishly, I think I’d like to… reassure you, or have you do the same for me, even when we can’t speak freely to one another. The easiest way to do that is touch.”
He traced once again over the back of his left hand. John let out a quiet "oh" within Arthur’s mind.
"I don’t know how, though, Arthur. Like I said earlier, your mind needs to be… malleable. Susceptible to suggestion. I can’t do it on my own."
. . .
Arthur struggles with being home. John has lost control of his hand. In the silent solitude of night, perhaps they can help one another.

Summary
“Coffee? Really? I’m ready to get home and sleep.”
“Pulling a double. Abbot could use an extra set of hands and well… I’ve got no plans.”
Dennis grew accustomed to losing. Throwing his hand in the betting pool had been an attempt to get people to like him. He doubted anything would actually come from it. After shift talks in the break room had a tendency to change his mind.

The night before Robby's last shift is quiet, comfortable.
He and Dennis leave work together and they pretend that nobody bats an eye, even though Robby can feel Dana's gaze drilling a hole in his back on their way out.

Summary
“And what about you? Are you in safe hands?”
Robby runs a hand through his beard. He thinks about Whitaker clinging on behind him on the bike. He’d hold on so tight that it was like he was trying to pull Robby into his chest rather than himself into Robby’s back.
“I don’t know about that either.”
-
Sick with their own separate miseries, Robby and Whitaker take a trip out to Nebraska together on Robby's motorcycle. They don't expect to find what they need in each other. And yet...

Summary
“He looked at the careful way Whitaker had made the hospital bed, the folded protein bar wrapper that had fallen to the ground, the bag that probably contained the kid’s entire life, and something in him just… decided.
Maybe it was the exhaustion. Maybe the weight of too many losses in one day. Maybe the memory of Whitaker’s hands steadying him as he got back on his feet in Pedes.
“I have a spare room,” Robby said, before he could start talking himself out of it.”
---
In the aftermath of Pittfest, Robby discovers Whitaker living on an abandoned hospital floor and offers him a place to stay.

Summary
The rooftop is peaceful, Dennis decides.
It's quiet, private, and far removed from the chaos of the ED.
An ideal spot for a post-shift mental breakdown.
He should've known that his attending would have the same idea.

Summary
“Can’t tie a tie. Just take me out back and shoot me.” Robby’s voice goes at the same time that Whitaker’s fingers brush over his throat, rubbing over the days-old stubble that he should have gone through the effort of cleaning up. Whitaker’s fastening the top-most button on his shirt, isn’t he? He is—and then he pops the collar to rope the tie back around Robby’s neck, pulling a little to get the measurements of each end of the tie against his torso just right, one end against his chest and the other down against his stomach, fixing Robby up in a way that’s really just undoing him.
“I believe in rehabilitation,” Whitaker says.
“Tell that to the rat from last week.”
Dennis sees the cracks in Robby. Convincing him to take a break before he breaks is easier said than done. It's not Dennis' business, either.

Summary
“You got a verse for that, too?”
Once again, Dennis pauses to think, willing his futile diploma into good use. He tries to stay focused as he meets Robby’s patient gaze, but the sight leaves his heart kicking erratically against his ribs.
“‘Come now, and let us reason together. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; if they’re red like crimson, they shall become like wool.’”
“Jeez, Whitaker,” Robby huffs, elated. “You got the whole book memorized?”
“Something like that.”
Robby and Whitaker keep running into each other at the hospital's chapel.

Carter’s not sure exactly when he first learned about the patented Peter Benton Dating Algorithm, but it must have been early on, because he internalised it like it was any other scrap of information he’d gleaned and hoarded like a crazy person, like his GPA (3.8), his birthday (September 9th) or his blood type (B positive).
