No matter how many times they meet and his eyes flicker with dim recognition, whether it’s at the dive bar on Beacon Street or the French cafe near TD Garden, she wonders which will happen first: Ilya Rozanov realizing she’s twins with the guy he’s been hooking up with since his rookie season, or that he’s in love with said guy.

Hockey makes sense to Shane Hollander in a way that so much of the world doesn't, and he knows never will.
His understanding of "right" and "wrong" has always been purely academic. Guilt and empathy are things other people feel, and hiding has become second nature. Hockey, though, is predictable; there are rules and patterns and strategies, and Shane learns to read and understand the gameplay like he once taught himself to read and (attempt to) understand other humans.
Then he meets Ilya Rozanov, his fellow star-on-ice; Shane witnesses the violence, raw and beautiful, that bleeds from the opponent who is his equal, and he knows that he will make that broken boy his.
