When Eighteen was finished, he sat back against the mattress and looked him dead in the eye. “Why the fuck did you do that?” He shook his head, rubbing his temples. “You’re so stupid, you know that?”
Seventeen hesitated. “Because I deserved it. All of it. Everything that’s happened is my fault. I should’ve been the one to die instead of Nasha. I should’ve—”
“Shut up,” Eighteen snapped, cutting him off. “It’s not your fucking fault she’s gone. What happened was an accident. You didn’t have control over it. If anyone’s to blame, it’s Marshall.”
“It is my fault,” he hissed. “If I had insisted on going instead of her, she’d still be here.” Seventeen buried his head in his hands, his voice muffled. “I’m disposable. That’s the whole point of my existence. I should’ve died. I deserved it.”
