“What did you give me?” he growls, burying his fear beneath a burst of anger. The room around them splinters, making gravity an uncertain principle: vertigo makes him drool and he spits, falling over, digging his fingers into the ground in a futile effort to make everything just stop spinning. “Oh fuck, wha’ ‘id you do t’me?” he slurs out past a suddenly numb tongue. The icy burn has spread out from his throat and chest to take over his whole body, sending lightning strikes of pain zinging up and down his limbs.
“You’ll find out soon enough, I think.”Yennefer is healing after Sodden, trying to pull her chaos back inside herself. She doesn't actually have time to chase down wayward bards, much less take care of the child-sized version of one she's never particularly liked all that well. She really is quite tired of being forced to save this fool.

Summary
Geralt has never known the gods or destiny or death to be kind, to show him mercy even if he begged for it. There’s no sense in it when he already knows the answer; bind it in a book or set it to a pretty tune, no story about a witcher will ever be more than a tragedy.
(Before he died scared and alone and half the Continent away from anyone who could save him, Jaskier spent more than twenty years making Geralt out to be the hero of his stories. It’s the least he can do, Geralt thinks, to finally fucking act like one.)

When he is four, Jaskier escapes out his window to avoid a boring family dinner where his cousin was getting betrothed to someone. He just wanted to hear the frogs. Frogs sound neat.
That daring escape, and the rescue that it required changed his whole fate, because he was the one who ended up betrothed to a witcher - the plan to marry when he was 20. He didn't really care he got to hear the frogs croak, what did he care about this Geralt of Rivia?
As he grows up though, he ends up caring a great deal.
Scenes from Jaskier's life of meeting every witcher but his betrothed, until one day in a shitty tavern, he finally meets Geralt.

On the path Geralt enters a Gwent tournament and finds himself with the prize of a cursed bard, whom he quite literally cannot get away from. He is determined to break the curse and rid himself of the annoyance, and continue on his loner and stoic ways.
Jaskier and fate of course have very different plans.

Summary
In the aftermath of being tortured for talking too much, Jaskier can't bring himself to speak. Geralt sympathizes with the bard, after all there was a reason he was so taciturn himself. Questions were not so much encouraged at Kaer Morhen. And for a lot of his life he'd always figured that is how you train a boy or an animal: hit it when it doesn't do what you want. After all, that was how he ended up as good at monster slaying as he was. But when it actually came down to it, that wasn't how he trained Roach. And negative reinforcement implies, at least etymologically, the existence of an opposite.
