Summer rolled up and the Pasadena heat was sweltering. Bruce changed the oil and filled the tank of his ‘85 Accord and set off for Dayton on a Sunday afternoon, intending to spread the drive thin over a week.

It was a fool’s errand of momentous importance. Revisiting the hallowed ground of his childhood as a man, and parentless at last, maybe it would be different. Maybe he’d feel in control of his fate; maybe he could put it all behind him.
