Richie shrugs, paws at his eyes with the heels of his hands. He feels suddenly very fragile, like unstable, like a bomb. Like he could start crying or puking or throwing punches. He remembers this feeling from childhood, like a dam somewhere inside him has broken and if he stands very still that maybe, maybe he can keep the churning contained.
Since Mikey left it’s been worse. The pit in his stomach gnawing and expanding and spreading like sour poison into his mouth and fingertips. Mouth and hands that he puts on, in Carmy. Infecting him too.

It’s not even weird when she finds the pregnancy test. Sydney’s worked in the industry for too long to judge what the hell employees and patrons alike put in the trash and she’s seen all manner of it: condoms, crack pipes, porn, etcetera. And it’s not even the first pregnancy test she’s found either, but it is the first one she’s found that’s positive.
She grimaces at it as she dumps the wastebasket into the larger bag, feeling bad for whoever’s it is before remembering some people see pregnancy as a good thing and not as a career-ender. And if it is an employee’s, or at least not a patron’s, it’s probably Natalie’s statistically. Sydney can’t exactly see Carmy messing around unprotected, and Richie’s too old. And Natalie is married and seems to reasonably have it together, at least comparatively, so maybe it’s fine.
