He goes to the fridge to look for the bell peppers, and while he’s in there, he says, “It was a good first kiss. As far as I could tell. I hadn’t really kissed anyone before.” He takes an orange bell pepper from the bag his mom brought over and brings it over to the counter. “Not anyone I really wanted to kiss anyway.” He cuts the top and bottom off the pepper and then works on cutting out the seeds. “Ilya’s a good kisser,” he adds. And he can’t believe he’s just said that out loud to his mom.

Shane remembered how he'd heard the front door close, then open a few minutes later. He'd thought Ilya had forgotten something. He hadn't thought much about it until he heard heavy footsteps climbing the stairs to their bedroom. It didn't sound like Ilya, who always took two steps at a time, even though Shane always told him not too. It didn't even sound like one person.

Summary
“Happy Valentine’s Day,” Harris says, holding out a card.
“Feels wrong to be taking a gift from another man,” Ilya quips, but takes it anyway. “What is this? ILY-a lot.” He stares at the card for a long time, jaw set and brows drawing together, before shaking his head. “I don’t get it.”
“Read it again, but slower.”
“ILY-a. Lot.” Ilya pauses, tilting his head and rereading it like the answer might appear if he tries hard enough. “I still don’t get it.”
Harris opens his mouth to explain—a bit annoyed at the idea of having to walk Ilya through the joke—when Shane steps in from the ice, breathless and a bit sweaty, clearly not paying attention as he fiddles with his gear.
“Hollander,” Ilya says immediately. “What does ILY mean?”
Shane blinks. “I love you?”
“Yes, I know you love me. But what does it mean?”
or; it’s February 14, and the Ottawa Centaurs’ question of the day comes in the form of custom-made Valentine’s cards for the players (some good, some not so much).

Summary
“Ilya I’m so sorry. Please don’t hate me. I can’t believe this is happening. I can’t believe I fucked this up.” He was sobbing again, sitting on his knees and pressing his forehead to the floor.
“Only you would get a girl pregnant first try. Is there anything you cannot do?” Ilya laughed at the impossibility of it all.
Shane’s sobs stopped abruptly and he slowly picked his head up from the floor to look at Ilya.
“What.”
“You have to be good at everything. Is exhausting. You can be bad sometimes!” Ilya threw his hands up. Nothing felt real anymore. His head hurt and his chest felt heavy and Shane looked like a broken doll on the floor in front of him.
