Summary
Continuation of the lives and times of the people encountered in my other fic: Permit A38.
Basically, Patricia Mackenzie of SHIELD marched through the swamp that is SHIELD bureaucracy to reinstate one Agent Coulson, and now that particular Agent has a job for her and her friends: become the Avengers Support Service branch of SHIELD.Pat isn't convinced it's a good idea, all things considered.
ETA: Coulson begs to differ. Sitwell appreciates that at least someone is equally unimpressed with
SHIELD'sthe Avengers' bullshit. Barton just wants popcorn. -

“Where the hell are you? Suzue just called me. She sounds worried.”
Daisuke knows he should stop - think. But self-sabotage is a game he can play well at the worst of times.
“That doesn’t concern you, Inspector.”
“Gees," Haru groans over the phone. "I don’t know why I’m even trying to help you when you’re like this.”
“Then don’t.”
“Believe me, I’ve considered it.”
Of all things, those trivial words are the thing that makes Daisuke flinch. He probably doesn’t deserve Haru’s concern anyway, not when he’s clipped every response so harshly. The silence is weighed, uncomfortable. For a moment, Daisuke thinks Haru might have hung up.
“But you can’t shake me that easy. So get off your high horse and tell me where the heck you are already.”
Suddenly, Daisuke feels less resigned about leaving the piano. There is another place calling him, there always has been.
“On my way to you.”
Daisuke thinks Haru might feel like a piano to touch, if he had the chance.

Yes, how dare Kambe Daisuke do this. How dare he reduce Haru to a mere shell of a functioning man, a broken wounded thing who only is capable of bringing his best game to smackdown a photograph rather than the casefiles on the desk.
How dare he provide Kamei with so much entertainment on this dreary, slow Thursday. Please continue.
“I hate everything about this,” Haru hisses the way a cat rejects being treated like a peasant eating food from the floor.
Reaching for the photograph, Kamei sighs. Only something very disturbing happens, then. Haru tugs the photograph out of Kamei’s grip. Like he doesn’t want to let it go.
“You don’t have to keep looking at it if you don’t want to,” Kamei suggests. As a suggestion.
The response is staggering. Haru folds the photograph up and tucks it into his coat pocket. Then he takes a seat, opening up a casefile he definitely isn’t reading because the contents are upside down.
“Nobody ever needs to see that,” Haru reasons.
Daisuke is on the cover of a magazine and Haru has a lot to say about it. Too much, in fact.

“Chicken is fine,” Daisuke replies, ignoring the jab and watching Haru dip the ladle back into the tall, aged pot. The stove is messy—more than a few accidental splashes have occurred, it seems. “Are you in any shape to be cooking?”
“I’ve gotten this far on my own, haven’t I?” Haru grumbles without sparing him a glance. “Just go shower. And don’t take up all the hot water or I’ll steal all your money and move into a fancy new mansion before you can.”
