    Abruptly, Sam wonders how many people have put a friendly hand on Bucky in the last ninety-odd years. How many times did touch like this mean pain and suffering, instead of someone trying to take care of him? And it makes his heart ache, the thought of how much devastation and roughness Bucky’s been through, denied this kind of casual, compassionate touch that Sam doesn’t even think twice about offering.

    Experimentally, he pulls his hand back. Bucky makes this low whining noise that makes Sam put his hand back immediately. And then he watches the way Bucky leans into it, eyelids fluttering like he’s almost falling asleep like this. Doesn’t even seem conscious of it, like he’s gone somewhere else in his head while Sam’s patching him up. And it’s – Sam doesn’t know what to think, doesn’t know what to feel. Because this is Bucky, and he’s showing such terrifying vulnerability, and Sam –

    Sam can’t help but wonder if Bucky still expects pain every time someone touches him.

     

    (Five times Sam realizes Bucky is touch-starved, and the one time he really does something about it.)

    'After the Flagsmashers mission and the incident at the GRC, Bucky decided to stay in Brooklyn to stay with Steve instead of moving to Delacroix to be closer to Sam and his family. Sam was a bit disappointed, but of course he understood. Steve and Bucky had history and Sam saw that Bucky wanted to spend as much time with his best friend that he could–how much or how little time was left.

    But one night, a little over a year ago, Sam got an unexpected phone call from Steve.'

    When Sam started to travel between Delacroix and Brooklyn to be with Bucky and Steve, he didn't mean to develop feelings for the grumpy ex-assassin. But between seeing how Bucky cares for his loved ones as well as offering comfort for Sam when he needs it most, it's been impossible for him to deny his feelings anymore.

    But when Steve's health takes a turn, how will the two be able to support not only their beloved friend but also each other?

    Sam's family is beloved by their town, charmed with all sorts of gifts. However, like everyone in his family, all of Sam's lovers are cursed with bad luck.

    EXCERPT:

    “This? This happens all the time, don’t worry about me,” said Bucky, but Sam knew that was wrong, he knew it as he kept holding Bucky’s hand even after Bucky was fully standing, “Are you okay? Those pumpkins flew everywhere.”

    This wasn’t happening to Sam.

    “Mr. Bucky, where should we put the pumpkins?” asked AJ as he and Cass held armfuls of pumpkins in their hands.

    “Oh. Uh. There’s a pile in the back,” explained Bucky as he released Sam’s hand and started to gather some of the pumpkins from Sam’s nephew’s arms, “I got these, don’t you worry – ”

    Bucky toppled over his broken booth again, and Sam knew it to be true. He knew what he had feared had come to pass.

    Sam wasn’t going to let it happen.

    Sam had seen plenty of traumatic injuries in his lifetime, between his time as a field medic and the days he spent as an Avenger, but he had never seen someone survive with injuries as severe as Bucky’s. The abnormal movement of his friend’s chest was enough to make him feel nauseous, and he threw up the moment the injured man was out of sight. If it weren’t for the serum in his veins, Sam was sure the impact would have killed him instantly. As it was, it was a toss up whether or not the soldier would pull through the emergency surgery.
