Summary
Aurora didn't consider herself a typically lucky person. She also didn't think that waking up in the same hospital at the same time as a man named Rick Grimes was less than a coincidence. But then she realizes that the world has ended, dead people are not dead and she's in Georgia, and she doesn't know how she got there because the last thing she remembers is being home, 3,000 miles away.
Maybe it's a twist of fate because a girl who didn't believe in love or believe she would ever be in love falls in love. But Daryl Dixon didn't believe in these things either, so it's a twist of fate for both of them. One thing is for sure, she was meant to be here, because well it brought her to him. And of course, the world had to end for them to find love, even if they don't know that's what it is at first.

“Where is Joel?” asks Ellie. He’s dead. He’s dead because of her, and they don’t want to tell her.
“Joel just got out of surgery,” Maria answers calmly, taking both of Ellie’s hands in hers. Ellie’s eyes snap back open. “Tommy is with him. You’ll be able to see him soon.” Ellie starts to sit again, to stand, to go to him, but Maria squeezes her hands in warning. “First, we need to make sure you’re okay. Next, we need to understand what happened out there, what Tommy and Dina can’t tell us. Then, I’ll take you to Joel.”

One day when Ellie was eight or nine, back at FEDRA, her civics instructor had hauled in an enormous, boxy TV on a cart and set it up at the front of the class. It had taken nearly five minutes to get it working—with “working” meaning playing a low-quality video of the Boston QZ’s first public executions—and Ellie remembers sitting there, staring at the gray screen, her ears filled with the buzz of static.

“I don’t know why I have to go to this stupid fucking group in the first place.” Ellie slumped in the passenger’s seat of Marlene’s big black SUV. She stared out the window at the evening skyline along the Longfellow Bridge, arms crossed over her chest, lips pressed together in a thin line.
“We’ve talked about this, Ellie,” her social worker responded calmly. “For the judge to agree to probation instead of jail time, you need to complete 12-weeks of court-mandated grief therapy, and since you refused to do individual sessions, we had to find a group that would take you. Compassionate Friends is the only one with an opening.”
“But it’s for people with dead kids,” she said flatly. Bereaved parents, was the politically correct term that the website had used.
