The long-armed bug knew what she was there for as soon as she walked into the room, scooping the halves of the shell out of her arms at speed and holding them up to examine them. "A mask, a face," they said. "This face. Broken. Forgotten? No, not forgotten, but left behind."

"Can you fix it?" Hornet asked.

The mask maker nodded. "Something has changed. I would need to see it to change the mask as well. Mask and identity go hand in hand. But if it is the same mask that you want, that will be an easy thing. It just may no longer fit."

"It's fit them fine before," Hornet answered. "I have to try this. If you're right, I... guess I'll bring their shade back here for a refitting or whatever you need to do." She wasn't exactly sure how she'd do that, but she'd find a way.

    Summary

Izuku is five years old the first time he's saved by heroes. He's an instant fan of the woman in pink with her cheerful smile and the man with his ice powers and fine-boned features, even if they both refuse to tell him their names.

For most of his life, Izuku has been the centre of villain attacks, but he has never been injured. Every time, he's saved by bright, unknown heroes—heroes who smile at Izuku, and ruffle his hair or ply him with hugs, and seem mesmerised by how small he is.

Heroes that the rest of the world doesn't believe exists.

Floaty Girl, he calls her. She’s his friend and it would be rude to keep calling her “the pink lady.”
    ---
“Uh,” says the tape hero, “I’m … Tape-Man. Yeah. Tape-Man.”
    ---
"I’m bad at coming up with things on the spot.” The electric hero scrubs a hand through his hair, making it stick up in the back.

    “How about Electro?” Izuku suggests.
    ---
Almost-Inginium agrees to give Izuku an autograph. He signs it, Your friend, just like Floaty Girl and Ice Prince.
    --
Izuku pushes his wet fringe out of his face. “Um … Thank you. For saving me, I mean. Can I ask what your name is?”

    “Froppy.”
    ---
He meets Invisible Girl and Ninja Warrior next, which leads to Izuku barricading himself in his room and theorising all weekend about heroes working in pairs vs in teams vs individually.
    ---
    “Hey, Operator?”

    The purple-haired hero snorts. “Operator?”

“It’s what I’m naming you," Izuku says. "You don’t seem like the type to reveal your real hero name.”
    ---
The man draws up his cape and strikes a pose. “I am Prince Charming, the hero who cannot stop twinkling.”
    ---
Izuku spends the week coming up with a name for her. In the end, he settles on Genesis. An appropriately cool name for such an amazing hero.

“Do you think the ship killed him?” Casey asks quietly, and fuck, Donnie has to give him something. He’s ruined the picture Casey had in his head of his uncle’s death: of getting caught hacking into a computer terminal and being killed by the guards, a quick end, maybe going out in a blaze of glory. He’s taken that image and smashed it beneath his heel, overwritten it with the potential of an unknowable horror. The least he can do is tell Casey the kindest fraction of the truth.

“If it did, I don’t think it hurt.”

Casey looks at him, all hopeful, held breath. “No?”

“No,” Donnie agrees. “It’s a ship. A machine. It’s not… cruel.” It’s so much more, but no, it’s not cruel. “It takes a lot of energy, though. I guess that’s why I was so tired afterward. Maybe it just took too much.” It’s possible. He’s not lying.

And Casey looks like he’s been given something precious. “That’s… Okay. I think he’d be okay with that.”

Donnie doesn’t say that he thinks his future self would be okay with just about anything, except failure. “What did you do without the probe?” He needs to talk about something else, shift the conversation back to safer topics, like whatever poor substitute Leo cooked up in place of his brilliant technology.

“Oh!” Casey brightens at the question. “No, the probe worked.”

    “What?”

“Yeah, it sent us updates for years. I don’t know how the Kraang never found the signal, he must have done some pretty crazy programming to hide it so well. It worked even better than he thought it would.” He smiles, proud.

Donnie feels like the world has dissolved into static. Because there’s no way. There’s no way his future self got caught by a patrol or used up and spat out by the Technodrome, and the Kraang didn’t tear the ship’s systems apart looking for whatever he’d put there. A stealth mission that gets discovered halfway through is, by definition, a failure. He couldn’t possibly have hidden the probe that well, could he?

“Of course it did,” he says, and hears the words like they’re coming out of a broken speaker on the other side of a stadium. “I’m the greatest genius you’ve ever known, right?”

Aka: where the alien that irreversible changes its host is Donnie, and the change is beautiful.

    Summary

"That light foreseen has turned cold upon this kingdom.
The seeds of war have been sown, we do not invite it now.
May Its sacrifice bless our Hallownest Eternal."

What if everyone in Hollow Knight lived during the golden days of the Pale King's rule?
This story follows the adventures of Hornet, Tiso, and the palace ghost, as they travel Hallownest in pursuit of their own goals. Hornet: a princess who wishes nothing more than to live a rugged life outside of her duties as the kingdom's heir, Tiso: an immigrant both looking to make a name for himself as a soldier and integrate into Hallownest's unfamiliar culture, and the knight: one of the Pale King's seven "impure vessels" who's seeking to find purpose in his life after not being chosen as the Hollow Knight.
As they interact, their goals eventually begin to intertwine into one singular mission: protecting Eternal from the wrath of the Radiance.

(Bonus details: Quirrel is a scholar/espionage artist, the Pale Court knights are the king's law enforcement, nearly all of the Spirit's Glade spirits are alive/repurposed as extra characters throughout the story, and the Colosseum of Fools/The Grimm Troupe are criminal organizations.)

“You know, I still haven’t figured out how you managed to get in here,” Hornet says after finishing her note, “I know this side of the palace is steep, you can’t possibly expect me to believe you climbed all the way up here. Especially not if you were the one who delivered all these papers.”

“Who says I did?” Quirrel replies lightly.

Hornet lays down her quill, squinting in silent irritation at the window in front of her for a moment, “Why else would you have opened the window?”

“Perhaps I just wanted some circulation? It was fairly stuffy in here when I entered.”

“Oh, don’t test me, Quirrel,” Hornet huffs, finally turning to face him again, “Stuffy or not, the gusts don’t start until later in the evening. Opening the window wouldn’t have helped.”

“I suppose that is true,” Quirrel sighs, “Though you really are overthinking this. Like you pointed out, the palace walls are too steep for a small bug like me to climb. And yes, I was the one who dropped off the papers.”

“So then, you found a way to lockpick my door?”

Quirrel cocks his head at her, “Was it locked, I wonder?”

There’s a strange pause there as Hornet tries to remember whether she’d locked it that morning. She wracks her brain for an answer, but surprises herself when she can’t recall specifically doing so.

    Bookmarker's Notes

His partner – they were new to the Organisation, he really shouldn’t begrudge them forgetting protocol in the heat of the moment – dragged him to safety, sobbing apologies and promises to make it right. He didn’t have the functioning vocal cords to tell them not to try, and could do nothing when they dug their fangs into his wrist.

He woke up in Morcant’s office three days later, with a pounding headache and half his hair silver-white. CURED, DO NOT TURN was written in bold red letters at the top of his information file for all future assignments with vampiric partners.
