Ace’s jaw plummets open, eyes bulging straight out of his face like he’s had all rational thought squeezed out of him, because what the fuck.
What the fuck.
‘What the fuck,’ flies out of his mouth in a high-pitched tone, because fuck it, he’s a goddamn ghost and no one can hear him anyway, which should give him a free pass to be as dramatic about this as he wants, as far as he’s concerned. He can only stare stupidly for a moment, unable to tear his wide, goggling eyes away despite the fact that he knows he should, because when the hell did Luffy and Trafalgar become a thing?

Something wet lands on Sabo's back. It's tears, he realizes distantly.
Fire Fist is shaking and sobbing, and when Sabo reaches back blindly to pull him closer, still disconnected from the world, Fire Fist makes an anguished sound like his heart is being torn out, and folds over Sabo's back, his front plastered along Sabo's spine, cheek pressed into the junction between Sabo's neck and shoulder. The whole weight of him pins Sabo down to the mattress, anchoring him back to earth.
"You bastard," Fire Fist chokes out. The rhythm stutters to a halt. "You fucking bastard."

"Hey, sleepyhead," Sabo says. His voice wavers. "Had a nice nap?"
"You son of a bitch," Ace says, and he's lunging forward to pull Sabo into a hug. Sabo clutches back just as desperately, ripping the IV drip out in the process but he couldn't care less; he buries his face into Ace's hair and inhales deep, catching the smell of sea salt and smoke.
"Thought I'd kick it from a romp in the sheets?" Sabo says weakly.
Ace shoves at him, but pulls him right back into another hug. "Fucker. Don't even joke about that." He squeezes Sabo tighter. "I'm not losing you again."

Summary
Commodore Portgas D. Ace was sort of a micro-celebrity among both pirates and Marines. Why? Because that guy could seriously not STOP GETTING INTO TROUBLE. Everything changes for Marco when one day Commodore Ace decides to drag HIS name into the mess as well.
The whitebeards will never let him leave this down.

Thatch, who had recovered from his brief shock, grinned like a Cheshire cat. “Oh, I knew you'd do that, Marco. That’s why…” He reached behind his back with a flourish and pulled out another copy of the newspaper. “...I brought a second one!”
The crew erupted in cheers, like children who had been promised dessert twice in one night. The commanders were practically high-fiving each other, while the newer crew members gawked in awe at Thatch’s preparedness.
“Thatch! You legend!” someone called out.
