Summary
“I’ll miss you too Holly,” Will says, voice soft and sincere.
“Are you sure?” Holly asks, quiet and vulnerable, “New York is big and exciting. You’ll be busy. Won’t you just forget about me?”
“Of course I’m sure,” Will says, “there will be plenty to do in New York, I guess, but nothing could beat Holly Wheeler,” his voice takes on a teasing lilt at the end, but his words are kind, just like Will always is.
Holly nods, assured she will be missed too, and goes back to her drawing. Will’s gaze turns to Mike and they lock eyes for a long moment.
Mike feels it, that buzzing in the air that sometimes exists between them.
It feels like pressing on a bruise.~~~~~
Post canon au with a little twist. Karen and Ted Wheeler don't survive the demogorgon attack in season 5. When all of his friends leave for college, Mike stays in Hawkins to take care of Holly so Nancy can finally go to college. Mike is left with a house to take care of, a sister to raise, and a whole lot of repressed guilt and grief (and maybe some other things).

Immediately upon recognising Will, Mike drops to one knee with a tremendous force and bows his head down, low. After a few seconds he lifts his head slowly, eyes looking directly into Will’s.

The knocking continues. "Yeah, yeah I'm coming, Jesus Christ." Mike opens the door and is immediately taken aback by what he sees. Standing before him is… a knight? He stands tall, actually just about as tall as Mike, he's wearing shiny armor with some sort of green cape hanging off of it and he has curly black hair that almost reaches his shoulders. When Mikes eyes finally reach his face his heart drops.
In a voice not so different from his own the knight speaks. "Ah, hello, is this the Wheeler residence?"

“Jonathan, it’s Mike,” Will says firmly. “Tell me what Nancy said.”“Okay, I just—I don’t really know how to tell you this.”
“Tell me what?”
Jonathan glances away from the road briefly to look at him. “They think he did it on purpose.”
His body knows before his mind does. The world turns on its axis. He feels like he’s going to be sick. He blinks rapidly, reaching out to grab the dashboard with one hand as he’s overcome with suffocating vertigo.
“Did what on purpose?”
“Jumped,” Jonathan says, careful and quiet. “The doctors think he jumped.”

Summary
“Why do you laugh?” Mike the Brave asked. The question was utterly sincere. He could not fathom the source of the mockery, of why Mike would be laughing at his display of fealty.
Mike spluttered, his face flushing. “I—It’s just… you only got him a book off the shelf? That’s your big ‘honour to serve’ moment? It’s just… a book.” He gestured vaguely, defensively, at the book, embarrassed.
Will the Wise’s lips curved into a smile tinged with sorrow. He looked from the flustered boy to his own beloved protector, his hand reaching up to stroke his Paladin’s cheek.
“He has crossed realms for me,” Will the Wise said, his melodic voice filling the cottage. “He has faced beasts and shadows and the silence of the abyss. He would do anything for me, and I for him. The grand quests are written in songs and psalms, sung by revellers around fires and bards in the inn. But the story of us… it is written in these small things. In a fetched book, a mended cloak, a tender kiss in the dawn light.” He looked directly at the younger Mike, his gaze piercingly kind. “We like to remind each other of our affections. In every possible way. There is no deed too small to be an act of love.”

Will’s smile dropped instantly. He furrowed his eyebrows at Mike. “Don’t joke about that,” he said firmly, turning away.
Mike wanted to take it back, to say he was sorry. But he couldn’t bring himself to. Not when he realized that it was true. He wanted to kiss Will. “I’m not joking,” he said. He thought it probably would’ve sounded a lot more convincing if he hadn’t been slurring his words. Stupid, goddamn, fucking alcohol.
“You’re drunk,” Will said. “You don’t mean it. Don’t say things like that if you don’t mean them. I get that maybe you think it’s funny, but it’s not funny to me. So please, just stop.”
“Will…” Mike tried to reach for him, to touch his shoulder and get him to listen, but Will stood up, leaving him on the couch where he would stay the rest of the night.

The reaction is immediate and merciless. Dustin makes a dramatic gagging noise. El gasps like she’s been handed gossip gold. Lucas high-fives Max, shaking her hand in his.
Mike doesn’t say anything. He just watches Will, watches the way he shrugs it off, the way he laughs a little too loud, the way his ears go red.
Or, Will's new boyfriend is a bad kisser. Mike thinks it's a crime that no one has kissed Will properly. He's on a goal to change that, Carlton be damned.
