Summary
“I’ll miss you too Holly,” Will says, voice soft and sincere.
“Are you sure?” Holly asks, quiet and vulnerable, “New York is big and exciting. You’ll be busy. Won’t you just forget about me?”
“Of course I’m sure,” Will says, “there will be plenty to do in New York, I guess, but nothing could beat Holly Wheeler,” his voice takes on a teasing lilt at the end, but his words are kind, just like Will always is.
Holly nods, assured she will be missed too, and goes back to her drawing. Will’s gaze turns to Mike and they lock eyes for a long moment.
Mike feels it, that buzzing in the air that sometimes exists between them.
It feels like pressing on a bruise.~~~~~
Post canon au with a little twist. Karen and Ted Wheeler don't survive the demogorgon attack in season 5. When all of his friends leave for college, Mike stays in Hawkins to take care of Holly so Nancy can finally go to college. Mike is left with a house to take care of, a sister to raise, and a whole lot of repressed guilt and grief (and maybe some other things).

On your 18th birthday you can start to receive messages from your soulmate. On Steve’s he realizes that he wasn’t worth his soulmates time. This idea is reaffirmed a few months later when someone new starts writing back to his soulmate. Steve’s just glad he gets to watch their love story unfold.
