Summary
Samira blamed the stupid tactical vest.
She understood the importance of being identifiably a part of emergency services when medics assisted SWAT as part of the tactical EMS unit, but if it weren't for the stupid police vest, Samira wouldn't have gotten herself into the whole mess.

Summary
“You didn’t do anything wrong,” Jack Abbot murmurs, pressing his lips to her forehead, before disappearing back down to the parking lot of her apartment complex. “I’ll be back in an hour. I’ll buzz three times when I’m back—I’m gonna leave my cell at home. Three times, alright? Three times, and only three times.”
Samira nods.
“Three times.”

Summary
He was meeting someone. And he was genuinely excited about it. He had been messaging a woman for weeks anonymously, and he was thrilled to admit they had real chemistry. It didn't erase the pull he felt for the R-3 standing next to him, but he was excited to make a connection.
"Well, I won't keep you. I'm just waiting,” she said.
"No trouble at all, Mohan." He glanced down at his phone and sent off a message.
(20:26) I'm here. By the bar. Blue sweater.
He heard the familiar ping that meant a message had been received from the app. He glanced back at his phone, but there was no message for him. Instead, Samira was looking down at her phone. Then back to him. Then to his sweater and then his face again. Her already large brown eyes doubled in size.
Jack felt realization wash over him. Shit.

Summary
She’s standing by the Hub, chatting with Dana, when Jack steps out of the exam room next to the bathroom. His mind immediately lights up. Samira Mohan is pregnant, and no one here knows.
“There he is,” Dana says as she catches sight of him. “We were just talking about you.”
Samira raises her brows, and he wants to kiss her right here in the middle of the bullpen. He doesn’t, of course, but he wants to, and Samira seems to know what he’s thinking because she shakes her head, half-grinning. “About me?” He asks.
“About house hunting,” Samira clarifies. “And your total aversion to fixer-uppers.”
“You can buy houses that are already fixed up,” Jack says. He is a grown man. He makes a good salary as an attending physician. Jack is not interested in being his own contractor. He’s not in Ortho.

Summary
“I could kiss you senseless,” Jack says, the thought passing from his synapses to his tongue without a single filter activating to save him.
Samira sucks in a breath through her teeth, adjusting her weight onto her back foot, and Jack wonders for the first time tonight exactly how much she’s had to drink too. If she goes for it too hard and with too little coordination, she’s liable to fall into his lap. Oh no. What a shame.
“Don’t you dare. You’ll ruin my concentration.”

Summary
In all her daydreams and girlish fantasies where Samira imagined the first time Jack Abbot put his hands on her, it wasn’t like this. In none of those scenarios was she delirious from fever, incubating a double infection of influenza and strep, and in need of hospitalization.

Summary
"We crossed a line, didn't we? And I don't want to go back." Jack's voice is low, quiet in the shell of her ear, more of a rumble than anything else.
His finger traces the curve of her waist, the dip of her navel, the ridges of her ribcage. They didn’t use protection. Neither of them asked. They are both board certified in emergency medicine; all risks they take are calculated. They have been avoiding this moment for years now, brakes squealing on a freight train, barreling towards a car stuck on the tracks.

Summary
“Work relaxes me, Mohan,” Abbot says, not quite chiding, his tone a shade warmer. He leans his hip against her workstation, ducking his head until she looks at him. “If I’m not at work, I’m trying to find a reason to come back to work. Let me read your article. I’ll be nice to you about it, not just because someone should, but because I can tell you without even reading it that it’s good.”
“You cannot possibly know that,” Samira blurts out.
He looks at her with an expression that’s stuck halfway between inquisitive and amused; the left side of his mouth threatens a smile. “Sure I can. I know you.”
++
Abbot and Mohan flirt in the Google Doc comments of her unpublished article. Abbot takes it upon himself to instruct Mohan on how to accept praise.

Summary
He’s barely made it home when he gets the call. Just pulled into the driveway that’s more of a glorified parking spot, just turned off the car.
“Come back,” Dana says, voice clipped. “An ambulance exploded in the bay. I don’t know what’s going on, the fire department just got here. They’re working on Samira now. You gotta come right back.”

Summary
When he boards the elevator he’s upset. By the time he leaves the elevator he’s angry, each reverberation of his feet hitting asphalt felt in the remaining bones and surgical grade titanium in his right leg, all the way up to his hip. It takes him less than sixty seconds to walk from the parking deck to the ambulance bay. Ten feet from the entrance, he sees Robby walk through the first set of doors, past Ahmad, and then through the second set of doors. His pulse roars in his ears, his heart pounding in his chest. For the first time in years, Jack Abbot feels something approximating rage, an emotion he has long assumed to be medicated out of him.
His hands furl into fists.

Summary
They fuck. He never lets her pay for takeout. They know each other’s locker codes. He knows her favorite candy bar. She knows he takes six sugars in his coffee, but would never admit it, even under the threat of torture. Someone would have to be torturing you, he quipped in reply. He drives her home at the end of doubles, sliding into bed next to her half the time. Sometimes they go to the movies. Sometimes she massages his leg when it’s sore to the point of muscle spasms. It’s been six months. They fuck, and they’re friendly, maybe even friends. But nothing more.
It is the most significant relationship of Samira Mohan’s adult life.

Summary
When Samira Mohan takes his hand at the end of Robby and Collins’ wedding, Jack Abbot is helpless. They’ve been in each other’s orbit all day as best man and bridesmaid. Since last night, at the rehearsal, then the rehearsal dinner. This morning, passing notes and presents between the bride and groom since sunrise. This afternoon, even as the photographer and coordinator forcibly adhered them to a tight schedule, shuttling them through wedding party portraits, the first look, more pictures. This evening, looking at each other from across the aisle during the ceremony, his eyes stumbling onto hers during his toast, the cake cutting, slow dances.
“Did you get a hotel room?” she asks.

Summary
She’s drunk on the floor of Trinity and Whitaker’s living room, and they’re talking about nudes when she admits she’s taken them, but never built up the courage to send any. That it’s always felt awkward, that she’s never felt pretty or sexy or delicate enough, that it’s always felt cringe.
Trinity blinks at her in confusion. “But you’re hotter than the surface of the fucking sun. I’ve seen what’s under your scrubs, Samira. What do you fucking mean, not sexy enough?”
“Seriously, have you seen yourself?” Mel asks. “You could put anyone on their knees.”
++
Samira Mohan turns thirty, decides to buy herself lingerie about it, and takes some nudes. And then she accidentally texts one of them to Jack Abbot.
