Ilya starts calling Shane boring regularly after that, not cruelly but persistently, the way you press a bruise you know is there just to confirm it still hurts. Shane's cereal is boring, Shane's training schedule is boring, Shane's shoes lined up by the door are boring, and Shane responds with variations of "fuck off" and "you're an asshole" that become increasingly creative and occasionally surprising. They do not talk about anything that matters. They talk about groceries and whose turn it is to take out the trash and whether Ilya's music is too loud at midnight, which it is.
On the ice, Shane is someone else entirely. Ilya watches him from the upper stands every morning with vending machine coffee going cold in his hand and doesn't tell anyone.
Or: Shane asked Ilya once how you know when it's the right person. Ilya described Shane to him, and Shane didn't recognise himself.

Summary
It bothered Ilya, he was used to attention from everyone, male female or other, everyone loved him, his face, his body. Ilya thrived like a flower in the sun, the gentle affection from everyone feeding him, recharging him, making him feel whole. But Ilya never got that from Shane, the cold exterior of Hollander cutting him like a knife when he dared get too close, the face never breaking in front of him no matter how charming Ilya tried to be. Never faltering, always a picture perfect photo of the enemies they were made out to be.
Facing each other on a reality TV show Shane and Ilyas biggest challenge won't be winning, it will be each other.

Ilya could have come up with literally a zillion things that make Shane that kind of face, but he really hadn't seen that coming when his serious boyfriend had said that about vaccination.
“HPV? What the fuck do those letters even stand for?”

“Am I interrupting?” A voice cuts through the air.
Jayce spins around, hand still to his chest. At first he doesn’t see anyone, and then, following the sound of a small puff of exertion, notices the thin figure who’s just slumped back against the wall, cast in the overhanging shadow of the roofline.
“No.” Jayce hears the defensiveness in his own voice. Winces at his failure to be casual. “No, um… it’s fine.”
“You don’t look fine,” says the figure against the wall, tilting his head to the side.
“Thanks,” Jayce laughs humourlessly, stepping forward. The figure against the wall, now Jayce can see him a little better, looks kind of like a puppet whose strings have been cut, folding in on himself, deflated. “Neither do you.”
“Mm, very perceptive,” he holds up a finger, then returns his hand to where it was previously wrapped around his side, as though he’s holding himself together. “That is, in fact, because I am not.”
