Rhaenyra sighed. She looked out the window where the dawn was bleeding color into the sky. “I did not come to witness a spectacle,” she said. “Nor to gloat. Even in your most uncharitable moments, you must know I am not capable of that.”
“Then why?”
Rhaenyra turned back to her. “Is it so impossible that I came to see you?”

Alicent inhaled sharply, shakily, and snapped her gaze back to Rhaenyra’s face.
“Oh, this?” Rhaenyra said. Her usually low voice was soft and highly pitched. As though she was surprised to be accosted, her eyes grew wide. Playing at the innocent child that she never had been, always insolent, always up to something. Slowly, she slid her thumbs between the silk of her dress and the gold chain shimmering around her waist.
Alicent and Rhaenyra have a chat. That's all.

Summary
If Rhaenyra had started with her manners then it was likely they would already be ensconced in some private room somewhere, Alicent doing whatever else Rhaenyra asked of her. The years had done precious little to shore her defences; if anything, they had grown weaker, what with the new methods Rhaenyra wielded to test her resolve—filthy promises made with looks and words. This relentless stroking of her palm.
When Rhaenyra says please, Alicent doesn't want to say no.

“Gods, Alicent,” Rhaenyra tossed back in response to a barely veiled insult. “The way you go on about my children’s colouring after we’ve been fucking! Would you rather them be red-headed, so you could imagine them yours?”
Rhaenyra had meant it as a jest, expecting Alicent to sputter furiously at her, enraged and gorgeous for it, but it wasn’t received as one. It struck a nerve. It gave Rhaenyra an idea.

It was very nice, all things considered. Alicent sneaking smiles at her across the keep, Alicent kissing her whenever she got the chance, Alicent making the chances. Alicent on top of her, under her, saying sweet, dirty things and trying to get her pregnant.
The trouble with all of it, Rhaenyra thought for the thousandth time—like the idea was a particularly persistent bee, or perhaps a whole swarm of them—was that for all the talk of getting knocked up, it wasn’t happening. And wouldn’t be. And she quite, really, actually wanted a baby.
Fantasy isn't always enough.

The sheriff station had taken on a strange stillness after dark—a kind of unnatural quiet, like a hospital hallway just after visiting hours. The overhead lights buzzed faintly, sterile and cold, one of them flickering with a rhythm that made Emma want to break it just to end the cycle.
She sat at her desk, back hunched, fingers stained faintly with ink and god knows what from a rushed fast food dinner she hadn’t finished. The fries had gone cold. The burger sat, untouched, in its greasy wrapper. Her stomach had given up protesting a few hours ago. Or maybe longer. Time had started bending.
Her head throbbed—low and deep, like a bruise forming behind her eyes. Her throat scratched every time she swallowed, but she chalked it up to the dry air or stress or the fact that she hadn’t slept more than four hours in the past three nights. Maybe five. Maybe two.
