Summary
If she’d been asked, she’d be driving home from Hawkins General right now, crammed into the backseat with everyone who shared her house but hardly seemed to remember Holly existed.
Would it be nice? Probably not really. But it would be something.
Maybe like something else during those first few weeks of quarantine, before Robin had gotten the Squawk back on the air, and she and Nancy and Jonathan and Nancy’s old boyfriend, Steve, had started working at the station. For a while Holly had assumed Steve and Robin were boyfriend-and-girlfriend now, like Jonathan and Nancy were boyfriend-and-girlfriend, everybody fitting into pairs as they grew older, but she wasn’t sure about perfectly-fitted pairs anymore, and she was pretty sure Steve and Robin weren’t together like that. For one thing, Steve kept looking at Nancy…mostly when he seemed to think nobody else was looking.

Summary
“Devotion,” she elaborates. “I find that a really admirable quality, yeah. But, you know—it can be less than—I mean, it is an ideal, guess it can’t be less than ideal, that’s probably, what, some kind of lesser form of oxymoron—"
“Rob.”
“It could get dangerous.”
“U-huh.”
“Of course that depends on how you play it. But if you, do you see what I’m saying, if you take it too far…or, on the other hand, you don’t take it far enough—”

Summary
“You know I have come across it before, right? Assigned reading.”
Right. Sure. Back when Steve last graced an English class, the Hawkins High PTA hadn’t moved on to witch-hunting just yet. Book-burning’s, what? One step down?
“So did you read it?”
Also, during crawl prep last week Dustin heard Nancy and Robin chattering about The Catcher in the Rye and heard Steve hearing, too—an impossibility possible with Steve, who’s a far easier read than the book itself.

Summary
His eyes were clear. In pain and weariness, beneath a haze of growing infection, they were clear yet. Wide and perceptive, and Cee felt, momentarily, that she could hardly bear to meet them.
“Your father,” Ezra said, “died the moment he set foot to the Green. You knew this.”
***
The road home: Cee and Ezra more or less immediately post-canon.

Summary
“It is to be broken. It is to be
torn open. It is not to be
reached and come to rest in
ever. I turn against you,
I break from you, I turn to you.
We hurt, and are hurt,
and have each other for healing.
It is healing. It is never whole.”― Wendell Berry, The Collected Poems, 1957-1982
Broken promises, distant memories... Taylor Jewel and Jeremiah Fisher should have nothing in common but mutual resentment. Why do they share a growing understanding instead?

Summary
“Jesus,” he says again, “fine. At least take that shit piece by piece. Huh? Like I need you choking out on me.”
“What would they do?”
Her voice sounds weird. When he raises his overgrown eyebrows at her, she takes another bite of toast.
“At Brookside. If I choke and die—” spraying crumbs “—that’s on them, right? So what would they do? They let you take me out. They aren’t supposed to do that.”
Gia Viti and Oz Cobb and the future.

Summary
He played every card he was dealt, not thoughtlessly but without the deliberation of a man who had much to lose. He played, Sofia thought, like there was nothing that wasn’t worth gaining and nothing that could be rightfully won. The game was rigged. No winnings, only spoils to be taken.

Summary
“I had a dream,” she said. Perched on the raised edge of his bunk, the berth’s only other piece of furniture a low-slung stool Ezra had taken to with a grunt and a crackling of joints. He eyed her in the way she’d never liked—Cee couldn’t face up to him as well when she felt that he liked her. “A nightmare, I guess.”
“On this matter I’d suppose you to possess more certainty,” he said, “as you wakened fit to wake the dead with you, or so I’ve been led to believe."

Summary
Lucy lifts her chin, staring up the bisected cavern where his nose should be—the weak starlight isn’t weak enough to help her out here, and he’s so near. “I didn’t realize we’d have to make up time,” she says tightly. “Tracking an injured man across the Wasteland.”
“Well, your daddy’s like you, ain’t he.” She swallows another yelp at the clap of his hand to her shoulder, the ghoul’s grip a hard squeeze, friendly only in that it isn’t unfriendly, and with a meanness in it. “Tucked in, buttoned up.” He eyes her zipper, half-undone. The pale, crusted neckline of her undershirt. “A stubborn little shit.”

Summary
The apocalypse is boring as shit. It’s frustrating as hell. And it leaves Nancy with a wasteland of brain space primed to be overtaken by…just about anything, really. But mostly Steve’s shoulders and the dark hair curling across Steve’s chest and the fresh scars gnawed into Steve’s stomach.

Summary
“Yen,” he says, exasperated and puzzled in equal measure (even drunk, she usually isn’t so maudlin), “I don’t give a dog’s arse whether you had a walleye or hangnails.”
“I don’t care what you think. And that’s not what I meant.”
