“My mom is hosting a potluck,” Nancy says, watching Robin closely. “The kids are coming. Well, you know. Half the kids are in my house all the time now. But the other kids are coming, and we thought…” It’s hard to know who’s included in that we, and Robin doesn’t press… “it might be nice to widen the age-range a little. You know, so I’m not stuck in the middle of an Erica-Dustin face-off.”
There’s a way Nancy has about her, a quirked smile and doe-eyes, that Robin has seen work on Steve many a time. It shouldn’t work on Robin, but she’s only human.
“OK, yes, I will come. I will accept my status as a better seatmate than Erica or Dustin.” Especially Dustin lately, she doesn’t add, though she could.
“Great.” Nancy’s tone is crisp. She turns, curls flying, and tosses over her shoulder—“Steve’s welcome too, you know.”
Because of course that’s what it’s about.

“Was I trying to?” Nancy says. She has the capless pen in her hand, and ink on her hands too, from marking every xerox-printed map of Hawkins she can get her hands on. The model needs to be perfect. That’s not Nancy being a Type-A neat-freak, that’s Nancy being practical.

“Uh-huh.” It’s the last week of July. The air from the open window smells like hot pencil sharpeners, soft with exhaust from the sorghum harvest. Summer’s final quarter has come with a dusky turn in all the leaves and an addendum to his contract at East Dillon, printed on cheap white paper. “And what’d they say about those who can’t teach?”
Tami reads from behind him at the kitchen island. She smells like coffee with the last of their creamer. Her hair falls into her face, then his, obscures the words REMEDIAL and ALGEBRA and FRESHMAN. But not so much that he can’t make out what they mean.
She says, “They pretty much teach, too.”
