And it is, she'd thought — said — absently. He fought so hard to keep his relationship to his children, to his now ex-wife, even as he went through the motions of rehab and recovery and constant HR meetings and random piss tests everyone conspicuously pretended weren't happening. He'd fought so hard, of course it's great.
Or it would be, Mel thinks, ducking away with lukewarm coffee in hand, if she didn't know the image of that key-chain like the palm of her hand.

There’s a spot on the side of the building, just around the corner from the ambulance bay, where the hospital’s security cameras don’t reach. It has a low window with blinds that are always closed from the inside and a stone ledge that’s wide enough to sit comfortably on, and it faces an overflow parking lot that hasn’t really been used since COVID.
She’s there for all of three minutes before Langdon finds her.

They were friends.
And yeah, maybe the ring on his finger sort of burned when he looked at her sometimes, even though it was just for show, now.
It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.
It raised less eyebrows about the nature of their friendship when the ring stayed on while he was at work, the weight on his finger reminding him not to say or do anything stupid.
It also made it a little less creepy when the pet names started slipping out.
