"I'm going back with Jonathon to New York," Will sighs, wiping the front of his palms on his shorts, "Then after that, in September, I'm going to school, in California, well, San Francisco to be exact." He's stuttering over his words just a bit, not making eye contact with any of them.
He thought he would have more time; he was counting on Will to stay. How stupid could he be not to have seen this coming? He almost laughs, but there is nothing funny about this. Will was supposed to stay; they were supposed to drop Max and Lucas off in California, drive back to Hawkins together. Mike knows things have been different since they got back from the upside down. Better than they were before with him and Will, but still, something was missing, something important Mike couldn't just put his finger on. Chalking it all up to the craziness of the events these past years, Mike put it aside, stupidly and wishfully thinking that at the end of the summer it would just be them. Will and Mike.

“Will said last summer you two had a fight,” Eddie said. “And that you yelled at him for not... having a girlfriend. So- Well, I mean, you can see how that sounds from an outside perspective, right?”
Mike didn’t. Actually he didn’t even know why something he said a year ago was still even relevant, especially because it was during a dumb fight and he always said stupid things during dumb fights.
Mike just stared blankly at Eddie.
“Are you kidding?” Eddie asked in disbelief. “You don’t realise how that sounds?”
“No?” Mike said, shaking his head. “I had a girlfriend and was being a douche that Will didn’t, I don’t even remember what I said during that fight. Why is this so important?”

Mike Wheeler does not care about gay people, not in a bad way or anything, he just doesn't care.
Not until all his friends think he's homophobic at least. Then he works to try and be better to stop misunderstandings like that from happening again. Suddenly all his friends start coming out and Mike learns of a beautiful word: Bisexual.

“You kept my painting,” Will says. Sure enough, there’s the heart on Mike’s shield, just as red as the day Will painted it. It was Will’s heart that he painted, maybe. It was also Will’s heart that he pulled out and molded into the lie he thought Mike needed to hear, halfway between Salt Lake City and a secret government bunker in Nevada.
Will’s heart is in his throat now, and in Mike’s hands, and on Mike’s wall, framed and carefully displayed.
They stand there in silence for a minute, Will on one side of the room and Mike on the other and too many years of radio silence in between. The quiet is so heavy it’s like a weight on Will’s chest, crushing him, applying pressure—but to a wound or to a bruise, he doesn’t know.
“Will,” Mike says. “Why are you here?”
(or, will has some realizations and a lot of hard conversations, and not every loss is forever.)

Even when he’s just talking to the rest of the Horsemen, there’s always something slightly more intense to Jack’s gaze; Jack stares at him as if he’s trying to memorise the lines of his face, as if he’s studying his likeness for a silhouette.
The closer you look, the less you see, he wants to tell him. That kid could learn every little bit of him by heart, could trace every contour of him with his eyes, and he still wouldn’t find what he was looking for.
Daniel struggles to make sense of Jack's crush on him, and somehow, somewhere along the line, he falls in love with him instead. Funnily enough, by the time he realises, Jack's already fallen out of it.
