Let it be known, Sam has never not done good things for Bucky Barnes. He cares deeply for his taciturn friend, who might be a little bit more than just that if he takes the past few months into consideration, but that’s neither here nor there. That being said, he cares if Bucky’s lonely, which he most definitely is if he’s still living in Brooklyn after speaking to Yori, despite Sam’s insistence that he just move closer to him. He doesn’t specify moving to DC or Delacroix, but they both know what ‘closer’ means.
For now, a cat seems like a solid temporary solution.
It all starts with Sam, a shelter, and this sweet kitten that reminded him far too much of a certain century-old, grouchy super soldier.

Abruptly, Sam wonders how many people have put a friendly hand on Bucky in the last ninety-odd years. How many times did touch like this mean pain and suffering, instead of someone trying to take care of him? And it makes his heart ache, the thought of how much devastation and roughness Bucky’s been through, denied this kind of casual, compassionate touch that Sam doesn’t even think twice about offering.
Experimentally, he pulls his hand back. Bucky makes this low whining noise that makes Sam put his hand back immediately. And then he watches the way Bucky leans into it, eyelids fluttering like he’s almost falling asleep like this. Doesn’t even seem conscious of it, like he’s gone somewhere else in his head while Sam’s patching him up. And it’s – Sam doesn’t know what to think, doesn’t know what to feel. Because this is Bucky, and he’s showing such terrifying vulnerability, and Sam –
Sam can’t help but wonder if Bucky still expects pain every time someone touches him.

Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes were once best friends working on the same sitcom. Now, five years after Bucky mysteriously quit and abruptly cut all contact with Sam, they bump into each other during the holidays in their hometown of Delacroix.
EXCERPT:
"I feel like I’ve seen you around before,” said the man, and Sam was about to shut whatever bullshit this man was going to say down but then the man lit up and blurted, “Wilson Family Seafood! I worked on your boat every summer during high school. You were in my sister’s grade – Becca Barnes.”
Sam gaped.
“Bucky Barnes,” said Sam as his mind raced.
Sam remembered him vaguely. Bucky had been older by a few years. A little intimidating despite his kind nature and goofy disposition. Maybe it was because he was a little older. Maybe it was because Bucky always seemed to be walking around shirtless on the boat during the hot Delacroix summers.
“Didn’t your sister blow up one of the chemistry classrooms?” asked Sam.
Bucky laughed.
“She got a few chemicals mixed up,” said Bucky like he had to tell this to a million people, “Also, it didn’t blow up. She just… gently singed the room.”

Sam wasn’t exactly sure what Steve expected the two of them to do after giving Sam the shield. Run into danger, join up with S.H.I.E.L.D, start The Avengers again? Whatever Steve had imagined, he’s pretty sure that he didn’t expect Sam and Bucky to move to a cabin in Northern Maine. Granted, Bucky and Sam hadn’t planned to stay in the small cabin in Maine either. Yet here they were.

“I hear you,” said Sam, rueful. He sighed and tipped his head back, pressing the heels of his hands against his eyes. “But I still kind of feel like I have to save the entire world, if I’m carrying this shield.”
“Sam,” said Bucky, and Sam lowered his hands and opened his eyes to look at him, only to find himself the subject of Bucky’s staring problem yet again. “Let’s just go out there. See who we can help, how."
Taking on the Captain America mantle is all well and good, but unfortunately, it quickly becomes pretty obvious to Sam that carrying the shield doesn't guarantee a paying gig as a superhero—at least, not any kind of job that fits with the kind of Cap Sam wants to be. But when it comes down to it, all Sam wants to do is use the shield to help people, so paying gig or not, he and Bucky set out on the road to do just that, and to figure out what kind of superheroes they want to be. Slowly but surely, they figure out just what kind of partners they want to be too. (Hint: it is not 'just a couple of guys.')
