Summary

But Hollander’s brow furrowed, not in anger but in confusion. “Ah, um, sorry,” Hollander said. “Merci. My English is bad. Worse… than you. Maybe slower?” And he leaned in, like that would help him understand.
Ilya’s eyebrows rose, and his smile widened.
Or, Ilya Rozanov grew up in Russia. Shane Hollander was raised in France. When they first meet, neither of them can speak English very well. Somehow, it’s easier to understand each other when words aren’t getting in the way.
(Stand-alone remix of “I’m Reading Your Lips (You’re Speaking My Language)” but this time neither of them are native English speakers, and learning a new language is sort of like falling in love, if you think about it.)

Ilya reaches for the bridge of his nose to try and stop the blood flow now trickling down the tendons in his neck, seeping into the collar of his leather jacket. He hears footsteps, and steady hands are suddenly on his face, beating him to it. They pull the cigarette from his lips, and it drops to the concrete like a shooting star.
“Tilt your head,” says the voice, and now the fingers are on his chin, doing it for him. Said delicately, as if this is his first ever nosebleed. He likes the idea that the slammer of this door thinks Ilya is a stranger to violence. It’s a gentle thought, another Ilya from another life, who isn’t familiar with blood in his teeth and broken bones. Ilya cracks his eyes open.

“It’s not–they had just asked us to take a photo, come on, Ilya,” Shane pleaded. There was a certain electricity that buzzed right underneath the surface of his skin. It made him feel jittery, like he was waiting for something. Anticipating.
Ilya chuckled darkly. He reached forward for his phone, hunching forward as he scrolled from one photo to the next. Shane walking up to Caleb. Shane smiling as he spoke to Caleb. Caleb reaching out for Shane. Caleb gripping Shane’s shoulder.
“Mm, he’s quite handsy, no?” Ilya observed. He stood up, walking slowly toward Shane, like a hunter to his prey.
“Y-yeah, I guess he was,” Shane replied absent-mindedly, eyes focused on Ilya. Instinctively, Shane took a step back, kept doing so until Ilya was crowding him back into the door. He felt himself start to grow hard in his briefs.
“ты забываешься, моя любовь,” Ilya said quietly, voice dropped an octave. You forget yourself, my love.

Ilya does mind. Hearing it said back to him, almost makes him flinch, a sudden and brittle sound right next to his ear that he fails to recoil from in time. But he swallows back the bitter truth and replies, “Of course not. If that is what you want.”
He waits, sitting on his living room couch, phone pressed painfully against his ear, his other hand gripping his knees till his knuckles blanched. He could feel his own heart rattling behind his ribs, pulse rockingloudly. His mind was an echo of alarm, demanding of him: Why isn't Shane saying anything?
It was the loudest silence he’s ever lived through, until Shane finally said, “Okay.”
