Summary
Morning shadows slowly lengthened along the dingy motel room walls. The strange marks embedded on the grimy window served to cast dark, foreboding patterns across the bed. Jim Gordon quietly sat up, careful not to wake its other occupant. The soft warmth of the previous evening was gone. Now only a curious, impersonal chill remained. He got up and moved toward the window, cautiously peering out for any signs of life. He needn’t have worried. The streets were deserted. The dense, early morning fog had yet to dissipate. It was Gotham just before sunrise.
