He was a pup just learning to growl, and still had yet to learn his prey from his predators. "I'm going to kill you. I should have killed you when I had the chance."
"Not for a lack of tenacity," Solas began, unperturbed, "but I doubt the effectiveness of a butter knife in an assassination attempt, particularly when its wielder can barely reach my throat."

Solas watched him come to terms with their new arrangement, amused. "Who could have imagined that interrupting a ritual ten years in the making would have unexpected consequences?"
"If it's a consequence for that, it's weeks late. This has nothing to do with the ritual and you know it," Rook countered. He pinched his hand, as if he might be able to will himself awake. When he remained where he was, Rook cursed, settling down on a boulder. "For the rest of my life. By the Gods."
"If it provides any comfort," Solas said, a wolfish grin spreading across his face, "I do not expect 'the rest of your life' to be exceptionally long."

But he is back up the ladder again, searching for the one he had been forced to turn away from. And he sees her once more, dressed as an instrument of battle in this eternal symphony of war. He chastises himself for almost passing over her at first, for how could he ever forget her?
A second volley of gunfire commences.
He had hated her when he first met her. Letting his thoughts linger on it, he thinks that maybe he still does. She was his first enemy and his first friend, his first love, his first heartbreak. She raised him up to the sun and did nothing as his wings melted. Perhaps she was the sun itself, back then. But she taught him about heat and he learned to live in the shade, ignoring the part of him that yearned for one more glimpse of sunshine.
