“Each of you will be paired with another, more experienced operative,” Kalina continues. “You will be inseparable. You will eat together, live together.”
Her voice echoes, suddenly, within the confines of Adaine’s inner ear. She doesn’t need to look around to know that every other graduate in line with her is hearing the same thing.
You will kill together.
“Every firearm needs a trigger,” Kalina says. Her eyes lock with Adaine’s. “You are those triggers. It’s time you met your other halves.”

Summary
In efforts to curb rates of infection, Kalina reads, dragging one finger along the faded words, conservationists and researchers have launched a large-scale effort to quarantine intermediate hosts such as snails and frogs. In doing so, they aim to prevent intermediate hosts from infecting definitive hosts.
The hope is that overall infection rates will decline, and the parasitic species afflicting these animals will slowly die out.
Kalina thinks about the taste of spit and blood—dirty coins, tinged with mint—and slams the textbook closed.
