Summary
An immortal’s time is difficult to count on clocks. Neuvillette and Wriothesley do paperwork with each other, over the course of years. An empty tea cup, sitting on its saucer. Wriothesley’s heavy black coat, folded on the back of his chair. The Duke’s fast, long, straggly writing – left-handed – his hand angled just so to prevent the ink from smearing.
Keen brow. Sharp jaw. Dark lashes. The scar under his eye. The way the Duke absently runs a hand through his hair when thinking.
The tiny moments – nestled among quills scratching on paper, the sound of typewriter keys, and too-full schedules – when Monsieur Neuvillette feels something he may have long come to call love, if only he were human.
A human might have professed his love already. Neuvillette is not human and has not done so, but maybe that's more okay than he thinks.

“Stop asking me questions,” Kaeya ground out. His expression was complicated, but Diluc knew most of them; he was angry, distressed, and something else that Diluc couldn’t decipher. “I can’t lie.”
Diluc almost laughed, but he managed to catch himself in time. The idea of Kaeya not being able to stretch and distort the truth was ridiculous. There was something about Kaeya’s eyes, though, that made him stop. “You’re not kidding.”
“I wouldn’t lie about something like this,” Kaeya said, through gritted teeth. “Not that I can.”

Neuvillette frowns at him. Such is the power he holds, that even Wriothesley feels berated with a mere expression. He says, “Your Grace, please don’t take this lightly. I am genuinely concerned about your well-being.”
“You sound exactly like Sigewinne when you say that. And really, it’s not that serious.”
That worried frown falters into something a little more confused. “Is it not? Then the worst news you speak of…”
“I’m in love with you.”
Neuvillette blinks.
Then blinks again.
“...pardon?”
Wriothesley has Hanahaki disease, and deals with it accordingly.
Sigewinne makes sure that nothing ridiculous (like a lack of communication) happens.

Wriothesley is not overly warm. He does not hover. He does not flatter or cajole. His affections, if that is what they are, are quiet. Deeply respectful.
So when he brings tea and does not linger, Neuvillette feels it.
When he does linger, but does not speak, Neuvillette hears it.
And when, one day, Wriothesley does not bring tea at all, only stands in the doorway with his hands in his pockets, and says, “I didn’t know what to bring today,”—
That’s when Neuvillette realizes something has changed.
The silence between them becomes something softer. Not tense. Not restrained. But careful. Like they’re both standing at the edge of something wide and unspoken.
Or, Wriothesley keeps brewing, and Neuvillette keeps breaking.

Though not well known outside of the Shire, it has long since been the case that Hobbits cannot survive the loss of their soulmates once they choose to let the bond form, their grief Withering them away only days or weeks after their other half dies. Most Shire-folk refuse to take the risk, finding love elsewhere, but if this quest has proven anything, it's that Bilbo is not like most Shire-folk.
The battle is over, and Thorin is not dead. Bilbo seems to be Withering anyway.

Óin can't help but chuckle when he enters the healing halls to find Bilbo asleep next to Thorin. It's hardly the first time their Hobbit has found his way to Thorin's side since they moved from the battlefield to the mountain, supporting his One as Thorin slumbered on.
It was not the first time he'd found Bilbo sleeping by Thorin's side.
It was the first time Bilbo didn't wake.

As Neuvillette completes their hug, Wriothesley truly holds onto him now. It’s not just comfort but desperation, as if the Duke would be standing in a current and Neuvillette would be the pillar that is not letting him be swept away by the waves that are too strong for his soul to bear.
Neuvillette’s left hand easily dodges the coat on the Duke’s right shoulder as he raises it to his nape, gently placing it over the short hairs and tender skin. Wriothesley sighs, raggedly, slowly letting air out of his lungs.
“Are you alright, Beloved?”
Humming softly, Wriothesley nods into Neuvillette’s hair before he sighs again. “I will be, soon.”
