“I liked it,” Tadashi admits softly, squeezing his eyes shut. “I like skating with you.”
It’s the only way he knows how to describe what the last few weeks have been like – the only way to describe what they’ve just done in the rain – and even all these years, chasing this feeling with Ainosuke is as easy as breathing.
It’s also marginal, the way that Ainosuke’s next inhale stutters, but Tadashi hears it anyway, the sound as loud as his heartbeat in his ears.

Tadashi is born in the fall, when the last leaves are barely hanging on to trees and a harsh chill begins to descend on his hometown. Yet it’s the flowering white chrysanthemums his father notices instead: brilliant, buttery-soft petals unfurling with an earthy fragrance in the backyard of their modest rented home. Tadashi’s name comes easily to him – radiant in its simplicity, a name grounded in loyalty and devotion.

One year on, Kakeru and Haiji spend the night together.
Haiji opens his eyes as Kakeru draws back, watching as his dark eyes catch the light, shimmering like the first star Haiji had seen that night. Even now, Kakeru is dazzling. He thinks Kakeru might lean in to kiss him again, but instead, he turns his head, lips landing softly on his cheek while his hand slides down to his neck, fingers resting gently on his pulse.

The sight of a neon green windbreaker with its back turned to him gives Kakeru the courage to call out. He opens his mouth, lips fumbling around a name he hasn’t spoken aloud in what feels like ages.
Before even a sound has escaped him, the figure turns and Kakeru bites down on the name before it slips his lips. It’s not him.
Now in his final year at Kansei University, Kakeru is busier than ever. He's trying to finish his degree while taking his new team to victory, but he can't help but feel like something, or maybe someone, is missing from his life.

“You get along well with Yuki,” he says softly, not looking away from the eggs he’s frying for lunch. “Don’t you?”
“Well enough, I guess,” Nico says, finally, looking up in time to meet Haiji’s gaze when he turns around.
“It’s good he has you to look out for him,” Haiji says finally, features softening as he smiles, lips curling up gently. “You’re good for each other.”
Nico stares at him for a moment, letting the words settle around him. It’s not how he would have phrased his relationship with Yuki, half antagonism and half snarky camaraderie, but something about Haiji’s words rings true nonetheless.
