Here is what Jonathan will not say: I stabbed my boss in the neck with a pair of scissors. I watched him die, and I didn’t even like him. I can’t leave you and Mom in California to go to Boston because I’m paralyzed by the fear something will happen, and you’ll both die, and I’ll be 3,000 miles away.
Ultimately, Jonathan will not lay his issues, his trauma, at Will’s feet and ask his younger brother, who cried when their father stepped on bugs and who has seen horrors Jonathan will never understand, to deal with it.

In one universe, Baatar is sitting at the corner table of some cramped dive bar in Ba Sing Se with two of his friends. One of them returns from the bar with a drink in her hand and shouts over the music, “Your ex is working the bar.”
“Bullshit,” Baatar says and drinks his whiskey.

Summary
Every child in the Earth Kingdom knows the story of the Red Thread of Fate.
The legend says that the ancient gods would tie a red thread between those destined to find each other in life. Those tied together by the Thread will have an important story, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The Thread may tangle, contract or stretch, as happens naturally throughout human relationships, but it can never, ever break.
Kuvira and Baatar are both far too pragmatic to believe in such things.
