“So. There’s a reason why I went to you about this.” He says.
“Okay, what is it?” Will carefully asks.
“You know how you’re in training to be a cleric, right? A- and that the professors say that you're doing amazing and that the divine calling in you would surely manifest itself as great power the more that we train as we grow older."
Will flushes at the barely hidden compliment but nods all the while. He's still confused as to what he's talking about, though.
"Where are you heading with this?"
Mike exhales a seemingly heavy breath and then speaks, deep brown eyes straight into Will’s hazel and voice carrying such conviction. "I want to swear my paladin oath to you."

Summary
Will makes a surprised noise, and Mike thinks back to the hiccup in his words. “I mean, I don’t want us to just be friends. I-” He cuts himself off.
With shaky hands, he takes the box from Will and lowers it down onto the table beside them. Breathing in deep, his own hands find purchase in Will’s, then he holds tight, as if trying to convey his words into touch.
“I like you, Will. More than just a friend.”

He’s heard from mom and dad that saying sorry works 100 times better if you give someone flowers. That could work right? This was nowhere near his original plan, but it had to do.
In a split-second decision, he looks down and sees a close bundle of little white flowers. Daisies, maybe.
Will startles. Mike had crouched down and proceeded to rip the flowers off the ground. The next moment, Mike Wheeler now had flowers in his hand, outstretched in the direction of William Byers.
The brunette stares. From the arm, the flowers in his hand, and then to Mike’s eyes again. For the first time in this life, Mike’s voice directly addresses him.
“Hi! I’m Mike. I’m sorry that I kept staring at you this entire time. I’ve just been wanting to ask, do you want to be friends?”

Summary
His eyes catch footprints in the snow. Hoping for the best, he follows them. It leads to a big mountain of snow near the fence of the Wheeler’s lot, and he calls out again. “Will, where are you?”
Out of nowhere, two familiar brown ears pop up from the mound of snow in front of him, and his body releases a heavy breath that he hadn’t realized he’d been keeping in.
“Will!” He shouts out.
Soon after, under the ears follow Will’s head, jumping out of the snow. “Boo!”

The urgency in her voice catches everyone’s attention: Ted and Joyce immediately stand up to look at the commotion, Nancy and Jonathan’s conversation come to a halt to see what was happening, and Holly flinches in surprise from the crib.
At that moment in time, Mike Wheeler had one of Will Byers’ ears in his mouth and was successfully nibbling on it. Emphasis on nibbling. Emphasis on ear.

Will's eyes flicker from the flowers, to Mike's face, then the box. He must've given Mike a strange look because Mike immediately rushes to defend himself.
"Before you say anything," Mike starts. "It's not a big deal. I was walking home and I passed by a shop and thought of you."
Nevermind the fact that it's Valentine's Day. Or that it is seven in the fucking morning, so what the hell could Mike even be walking home from? But sure, what the hell.
"Just take it." Mike pushes the items into Will's chest and he hurriedly catches it with his arms. "Y'know just…for being my bestfriend."
And there it is. That goddamn label.

Summary
Soulmarks were special.
Movies liked to romanticize them, sure, but they were more than a mark. They were a symbol of a lifelong bond, of a closeness that many yearned to achieve. Married couples showed them off more than wedding rings if a pair of matching marks appeared, gloating to all that would listen.
The marks were sometimes identical, but other times matching as a pair. It would be something meaningful to the pair, typically, something that brought joy.
Mike and Will had their first matching ones appear when they were 6 years old.
