Rationally, Jayce is aware that Viktor provokes fights purely for his own enjoyment at least half the time. Not even someone as dead-set on being a bastard can realistically find enough reasons to start an argument as frequently as Viktor does. Rationally, Jayce is aware that he only gives Viktor what he wants when he responds to the provocation with anything other than pure indifference.
It’s real fucking difficult to stay indifferent when Viktor starts talking, though, and the urge to rip him apart is so physically overpowering, Jayce really has no other choice than to at least scream at him a little bit.
Or: Viktor pushes, and Jayce has no other choice than to push back, because his ego has always been fragile like that.

The walls here remind him of the hall where the debutants make their attempted marks. The stairs up to the gallery are carpeted, and as the soles of his boots lay upon each one, the give sends him right back to the steps at Bridgerton House. The light is even shining similarly to how it does back in England, and perhaps the sun is the same everywhere but he never seems to notice that until the pain of distance becomes ineludible.
Yes, he feels it right behind his heart, in the way he swallows more thickly as he wakes now. It’s in each breath, as if the air here just isn't quite right…

Penelope stared at him. “Now why on God’s green earth would you want to do that?” she asked, more bluntly than was perhaps proper for a young lady. “We can’t pay you.” Their father had left them with almost nothing, save this land and the house they were standing on. It was a pretty nice house - better than some of the others in the area - but life was hard.
He shook his head and turned his hat over in his hands. “No, I didn’t expect you could. I hoped you might instead pay me in kind.”
Penelope’s cheeks flushed red and she looked down, her hands smoothing the faded yellow cotton of her day dress. She didn’t suppose he meant what it sounded like he meant, being a gentleman and all, but the idea of Colin Bridgerton taking that sort of payment from her made her cheeks hot.
