Summary

Jayce was the most blissfully effortless thing in Viktor’s life to claim. Capturing him had been as easy as a wine drenched kiss. But Viktor still felt that deeply ingrained instinct to dig in his nails and teeth and cling onto him as if at any point someone would try to take him away. Eventually, Viktor stops even trying. He'll reach for an orange and roll it about mindlessly on the table top for a few minutes as he thinks, or ponders a particularly challenging runic equation. He'll roll one of them back and forth between his palms as he stands at the chalkboard, eyes raking over their scrawled notes and diagrams. And sometimes, he simply grabs an orange out of their dwindling supply, and plops it next to Jayce's elbow without a word. In all cases, the wordless request is there; and every time, Jayce takes up the orange, peels it, and sets it back on Viktor's side of the table. Often--not always, but often enough--he'll get a quick smile from Viktor, a duck of his head in thanks, before he goes back to whatever he was working on or talking about.
Sometimes, he pushes the orange back to Jayce's side, and Jayce realizes that he has not in fact eaten yet that day.

Sometimes, peeling an orange is just peeling an orange.
Sometimes, it means something more.

Jayce laughs, but there’s no humor in it. It’s bitter, shaky, and scrapes against the walls of his chest on the way out. “I'm afraid of you. Of what you mean to me.” He finds the courage to peer at Viktor again. “That this won’t mean the same thing to you that it does to me.”
Viktor studies him. "And what exactly does this mean to you?"
The question isn’t harsh. It’s resolute; firm in the way Viktor always is when he’s searching for clarity. Jayce doesn’t look away, doesn’t flinch from the weight of it.
"It means everything."
The Hexcore is blipped from existence, and Jayce and Viktor run from the chaos. Turns out that they love each other a little too much.
