Summary
Lucy stumbled down the stairs, heart racing and head pounding. Number 35 Portland Row was silent, unlike her mind, which was still reeling from the screams of her nightmare. Child after child had screamed her name, begging her to save them, grabbing her with clammy, cold hands as they had died brutally from ghosts and criminals. As she had scrambled away from them, she’d been faced with her friends, standing in a half-circle around her, their eyes dead. Their pale, blue-tinted faces lingered in her mind. She clutched the handrail, leaning heavily against it as she half-fell down the last three steps. Maybe she wasn’t doing enough. Maybe there was more she could do. Maybe, if she just tried harder, nobody else would have to die. She could save everyone.
After taking in a few steadying breaths at the bottom of the stairs to calm her trembling body, Lucy pushed into the kitchen. She flicked on the lamp, and turned to the room to find Lockwood sitting with his feet in fuzzy slippers up on the table.
“Hell,” Lucy swore, hand flying to her chest. “Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”
Lockwood raised an eyebrow slowly. “Not particularly. My intention is to prevent one.”

Summary
“Do you want tea, Luce?” Lockwood’s head poked out of the door from the kitchen, his brown hair flopping over his eyes. His white shirt was rumpled, and there was such an air of softness about him that Lucy wanted to grab her camera and capture it forever. But it was upstairs, in her room, and by the time she grabbed it, he would have that egotistical smile on his face and be posing like the picture would be in the newspaper.
She drew her blanket closer around herself, shivering. “Mmm, please,” she replied, and he flashed her a quick grin. He returned in a moment, bearing two steaming mugs of tea.

Summary
The first time Hanne saw the boy, he was standing in her front hall, head bowed before her father. His hair fell long around his shoulders, and the light streaming in from the high windows made it sparkle bright and flaxen. It reminded Hanne of midwinter sunsets on cold northern lakes, when the fading sun turned the water into liquid gold. This rendered the boy forever magical in her mind. Even as they both grew and changed, as society battered them into its preferred shape, and as their lives separated them, he still remained her sunlight.
Or; Hanne and Matthias are childhood best friends, and they would do anything for each other.

Beside her, Sokka snivelled, blinking away tears. Katara reached out and grabbed his hand, and offered a small smile, the best she could offer at a time like this. He gave a watery smile back. But seeing him red-eyed and disheveled only made loss hit Katara like a fresh wave, and she swallowed back a newly-formed lump in her throat. She focused on her breathing, drowning out the rambling voice of the funeral director speaking about loss. Biting down on her lip, she forced herself not to cry. Or should she? It was probably proper to cry at her best friend’s funeral. But like a dry well, she reached inside, searching for emotion, and came up empty.

Summary
Jinora wishes she could teach Ikki to be more like her - safer, less prone to injury. Wishes she could lock her sister in their house so she’d never get hurt like this ever again, wishes she’d been able to keep Ikki home from school until her ear was feeling completely better so this never happened in the first place.
She can’t. Of course she can’t. She can’t protect Ikki from the world, can’t hole her up so she never experiences any harm, whether physical or emotional.
But maybe it’s being an older sister that makes Jinora wish.
