Batman hadn't meant to say the words, that much was obvious. The man refused to let anyone know who he was beneath the cowl. Even after a decade of working together, he and Superman still had no idea who the other was in their day to day lives. Until now, anyway.
Batman was Bruce Wayne, and Clark wasn't entirely sure if he was willing to believe such a tall tale. Surely Batman of all people wouldn't be looking at meek reporter Clark Kent with any kind of interest.

During a team-up, Robin lets slip that a certain Bat's birthday is coming up. Superman reacts accordingly, as does Batman — naturally, they engage in complicated communication rituals.
