Summary
For Ichika's fourteenth birthday, she receives gifts from the others that she wishes to share. Ichika opens her bag of Phenny gummies, offering a few to each of them. Honami and Saki eat theirs eagerly. Shiho hesitates, holding one in their hand.
“What’s wrong, Shiho-chan?” Honami asks, frowning at them. “Aren’t you going to try?”
Shiho hesitates once more, looking around before swallowing. “It’s just… really cute,” they admit, turning a bright shade of pink.
…safe to say, Ichika waited until they weren’t around to pass out the rest of them.
(For Ichika’s fourteenth birthday, she stares up at the stars on her ceiling and cries. She wishes that in this world, the four of them were together.)

“Ichika-chan…?”
Ichika doesn’t have time to explain. She grabs Honami’s arm. “Run.”
And that’s how Ichika has ended up in this situation: barreling through an empty ship with her girlfriend at her side, frantically dashing to the engine room before they all die (and by they all, she means the two of them and also Mr. Apples, who would arguably be the saddest death of all).
“What are we running from?” Honami shouts behind her, her hand interlocked with Ichika's and Mr. Apples hanging onto her shoulder for dear life.
“Evil space plant!” lchika yells back. “You can tell from the shapes of the midrib and veins that it’s a— ack, no time to explain!” Ordinarily, Ichika would love to go on a long tangent about the types of life in this galaxy that could kill them all in a heartbeat, but when they are actively a heartbeat away from being killed, maybe it’s time to save her breath.
(She’ll tell Honami all about it later. If they survive.)

“So!” she says, as soon as she’s swallowed her first fork of food. “What’s the plan for the day?”
Honami smiles. “Well, I thought it’d be nice to make a nice breakfast for everyone.”
“It was very nice,” Ichika agrees. She shovels another bite into her mouth. “Tastes delicious, Honami.”
“As always,” Saki hums, smiling. Nice going, Saki. Hona-chan’s meal of the day was breakfast! That means my dinner reservation is in a safe space. She has to bite back delighted giggles. See, Icchan! This was a good idea. Now Shiho-chan just has to say they got us tickets to a concert down the road and—
“I booked us a reservation for dinner,” Shiho says. “At a fancy new noodle place.” They smile. “My treat.”
They might as well have just announced they were leaving Leo/need to join STANDOUT.

“You’re really pretty, Icchan,” Saki whispers, just loud enough for the room to hear.
It’s a miracle Ichika’s face doesn’t catch on fire. She certainly feels like it is. “Uhm— uhm—” she stammers, unsure what to say.
“...I think you broke her, Saki,” Shiho comments dryly, but when Ichika’s eyes dart over to them, she can see they’re similarly flustered. You weren’t even the one in this game! Ichika thinks, but she supposes she can’t blame them. She’d probably react the same if two of her best friends kissed in front of her. Oh, she feels dizzy. She really wants to kiss Saki again. Her words are acting on that thought before her brain can hold itself back.
“Do you want to play again?” Ichika blurts, and everyone freezes.

“The cake is drowning, Ichika,” Shiho deadpans, staring at the batter. They lift their head, meeting her guilty eyes. “You drowned it.”
“I— I did not!” Ichika defends, looking away from them to peer down at her work. “…it looks fine to me.”
“I said one cup of water. One. Four? How— how did you even hear me say four?” Shiho sputters. “Why would we need more water for the recipe than flour?”
“I don’t know! All I’ve ever made are cookies, or candles… never cake! But it looks fine, Shiho.” She stirs the batter around to prove it. It sloshes pathetically against her spoon, much too runny to be realistic. “See?”
“I’m starting to see why you were bad at math.”

“Your words are always inherently more sappy than mine because they’re from you. Our cute sappy lyricist,” Saki says with a giggle, reaching a hand over to bop Ichika on the nose. “You really know how to tug at heartstrings with your words.”
Ichika definitely fails to hide her blush this time. She tries to stammer out a comeback, but she’s once again fallen victim to Saki’s flattery. Saki’s grin just grows, knowing that she’s won. She leans further into Ichika’s shoulder, laughing lightly. “Well, unless you’re flustered. Then you’re just cute.”
“You’re teasing me,” Ichika whines, putting her face in her hands.
“Me? Tease you? Oh, I would never. On Icchan day part two? That should be considered some sort of crime.”
“I told you, it’s not my birthday anymore—”

Ichika blinks slowly, disoriented and confused. Why is it so dark? Where is she? Where are her friends? As her vision gradually comes back to her, all her questions are answered: she’s in the movie theater, the credits are rolling, the lights are fading back to a dim, and the faces of Saki, Honami, and Shiho all peer down at her as they stand around her chair.
“Hrk—“ she groans, to answer Shiho’s question.
“She did fall asleep,” Saki says, and laughs, shooting Shiho a smug grin. “I won the bet. You owe me money now.”

Honami looks like she’s five seconds from driving her palm into her face. “Not the band! I mean like… us! Because apparently you—“ She motions to Saki— “are telling Kohane-chan it’s our six-month anniversary, you—“ She glances at Shiho— “are convinced we have a week to go until two-months, and you—“ She turns to Ichika, then hesitates, seeing the look on her face. “…I don’t think you have any idea what’s going on.”
“I really… don’t,” Ichika admits helplessly, running her fingers through her hair.
Saki sputters. “But you’re the one who first asked all of us out!”

Ichika lost badly, three times in a row. Each time, she finished worse than most of the NPCS, and each time Saki would break into hysterical laughter and pour her another shot. The only reason Ichika isn’t four shots deep within the quarter hour is because Honami felt so bad that on the last race of the circuit she slowed down just enough to let Ichika win— which took more effort on her part than actually playing.

Honami blinks, a bit taken aback. This wasn’t the kind of question she had expected to receive. Her thoughts must’ve mirrored those of the others, because Shiho voices the same thing. “What kind of truth question is that?”
“It’s just something I want to know!” Ichika defends herself, shooting Shiho a glance. “I read about them the other day, and it made me think. Do you think soulmates exist in every universe?”

Shiho’s head snaps up. “What?” they call to her.
“I’m… I’m stuck.”

Ichika turns, peering over the guitar slung around her shoulder. Saki has caught up to her, leaving Shiho in the dust after a hug attack to match Ichika for stride. Behind her, Shiho straightens out their shirt, a pout on their lips and a giggling Honami at their side. Ichika huffs out a little laugh, watching as the two of them pick up their pace as well. She then moves to face forwards again, giving Saki a skeptical look. “If I tell you, it won’t come true.”
Saki blows her a raspberry. “That’s a myth. I want to know.”
Ichika tilts her head. “What about that time when you turned eight? You wished for a pony, and then told everyone you wanted a pony, and then you never got a pony. And it was all because you told everyone your wish.”
“Of course I didn’t get a pony. How would my parents even get a pony, nevertheless keep it— oh, you’re joking. You’re teasing me.”

Because what else would you do if you were pinned to a tree by a blade in your shoulder and missing a hand? Cry? Muichirou certainly didn't think so. So instead of giving in and hanging limply like a dart on an arrow board he grunted, pressing his feet against the wooden trunk and reaching with his only remaining arm to clamp around the sword’s handle, precariously attempting to pull it from bloodied flesh.
