He was helpless, the only thing Sam had left to do now was close his eyes, hope the branches of foliage below were enough to break his fall, and brace for impact. He’d been through the training, feet first into a roll was his best bet; the second option didn't seem feasible with the lush blocking his path but he could at least stave off lasting damage. Hopefully.

Vampire hunter Bucky Barnes has worked ‘willingly’ for the Hostile Yield Deterrence and Response Academy (H.Y.D.R.A for short) for what feels like seventy years. He’s never turned down a job, and is known in the community as the ‘Winter Soldier’ for his brutal efficiency at wiping out Vampire broods in the colder months when all other agents have given up. He doesn’t have a family, or friends - has time for neither, wouldn’t want to put them at risk regardless.
Sam Wilson was a young man when an accident in the military led to his turning. He came to terms with it rapidly, and was one of the lucky few able to tame his bloodlust before it could get the better of him. Now, with his young charge Joaquin, a freshly turned young vampire who turned to him for guidance, he works closely with the Sanctioned Hunters: Intelligence, Elimination, Logistics Division to prevent the growth of Feral broods from damaging vampire-human relations permanently.
Bucky thinks Sam is a stuck up, arrogant ass who needs to be eliminated before he becomes feral. Sam thinks Bucky is the world's most unbelievable douche.
Inevitably, they fall in love.

Sam is no stranger to people hating him. In this line of business, it was common. In the skin he lived in, it was a given to being alive. Strangers yell at him in the streets, old ladies clutch their purses, enemies aim their guns at him. He had nearly fifty years to get used to it, how everyone seemed to hate him, how he had to walk on eggshells because one wrong step would undo everything he worked so hard for.
He’s used to pain. He’s broken more bones than he could count, bandaged more cuts than the clumsiest of people, and shoved more unwanted thoughts down than the guiltiest of soldiers.
Still, when the boy comes at him swinging, Sam is completely defenseless.
Sam heard once that if you repeat something enough times, it loses its meaning. He’s sat through enough briefings, survived enough missions, and buried enough bodies to know that they all blur together. He’s watched enough cities crumble to learn to forget they were there at all.
Get up. Get up. Get up. Keep getting up, even if you forget why.

Sam mimicked the movement, but in the opposite direction because he was contrary. Bucky’s thumb slid away and Bucky missed the warmth instantly. “Not a damn thing, Barnes,” he breathed.
“What do you need, Sammy?” he nettled again, hand stilling for a breath. “Just tell me. Just ask for it. I’ll give it to you.”
“Nothing,” Sam insisted again. Then he added, “You smell like cheap bourbon,”

It had all started fairly normal; he and Bucky had been briefed on the mission they had to embark on at dawn; a lab discovered on an island, with strong suspicions of illicit research, which the authorities theorised might be alien-forward, or another HYDRA base.Turns out it's neither, and Sam ends up taking the brunt of the damage when Bucky gets hit with a product that turns him feral.

“What does it look like?”
What it looked like was a pillow. It was nearly as tall as Bucky was, and maybe a foot and a half wide. The background was white.
He noted all of these things in the back of his mind. The front of his mind was preoccupied with the stylized illustration of Sam, printed on the full length of the pillow. He gazed out at Bucky with the same easygoing expression Bucky had seen a thousand times, though somehow this version conveyed a distinct smolder.
He was also naked. At least, Bucky assumed he was. He was definitely shirtless and pantsless, but he was holding the shield over his crotch.
“It’s double-sided,” Yelena said helpfully.
(Bucky receives a birthday gift that he absolutely, positively, does not want. At all.

Sam wasn’t really sure what to do with that knowledge – that the ex-assassin sitting in front of him, holding his hand in mental and in flesh, and stitching Sam back together like paper and glue – was someone he also thought as a broken, brilliant beautiful thing that Sam could unravel like twine and string, but – inexplicably, impossibly – he did.
Or Bucky is stitching Sam back together after endgame, and there’s banter and feelings and guilt and almost-confessions. And that’s okay; they’ll get there one day.
