Summary
“Reggie.“ A poke of his temple. “Reggie, c’mon, wake up.” Another nudge to the side of his head. “Reggie,” an incessant voice draws out in the most irritating tone known to man, “don’t make me tickle you.”
“Try it and I’ll hex your hand off faster than you can scream,” Regulus says into his pillow. “And don’t call me that.”
“Oh, good, you’re awake,” Sirius says.

Summary
The call came about ten minutes after Bernard got home from his shift. Tim’s name flashing across the screen, an unfamiliar voice on the other end of the phone—a scene that’d plagued the worst of his dreams, come to life.
Fear gas. All things considered, it could’ve been worse. Tim was stable, Dick had made sure to say. They just needed to wait for the toxin to leave his system. But he was asking for you, he’d added. And he, uh. He said you knew about—y’know. Our night jobs. I know this isn’t exactly an ideal way to meet, but do you think you could maybe…?
I’m on my way, Bernard had said, and then he’d driven across the city like an absolute maniac in twenty minutes flat.

Summary
He recruited James first, of course, as an invisibility cloak was crucial on this sort of endeavor. Remus came next; Sirius cornered him when he was engrossed in a book (the best time to accost him, as he would agree to near-anything in order to be left alone), and after a fair bit of pleading, he conceded with a weary sigh.
Peter kindly declined his invitation with an “Oh, fuck no, I’m not getting involved in that mess,” which left the rest of them to cram themselves beneath the cloak and set off on their mission.

Summary
“Give me one good reason not to kill you,” says Sirius, wand pressed to Regulus’s throat.
They are standing in the living room of his flat—the one at the edge of Muggle London that Regulus isn’t supposed to know about. Sirius is in his pajamas, sleep-rumpled even though night has only just fallen. Is the Order truly this lax with its members?
“Oh, please,” Regulus says.

Summary
If he concentrates, it’s easy to tell who’s really there.
He’s sitting in a café for free internet while he scrolls through job listings, looking for something that doesn’t require a high school diploma. The barista behind the counter, he’s real. Peter can hear a heartbeat. The lady ordering coffee, too, and the couple on the other side of the room, typing away at their phones. When a new customer enters, people react; their heads turn, even just slightly, and it lets Peter know that he’s not hallucinating. Imagining. Whatever.

Iron Man’s been following him.
Peter first noticed a week ago—the sound of those repulsors is anything but subtle, and after the brief mess with the Accords, the press is still reporting the Avengers’ whereabouts at all times. It isn’t hard for him to figure out why Tony Stark is spending so much time in Queens.

Flash doesn’t know exactly when he decided Peter Parker was his worst enemy.
It’s just—look, here’s this kid who’s an actual orphan and yet he’s still more loved than Flash is. It’s wrong, Flash knows, to hurt him like this. But how is he supposed to respond, except with violence?
Like father, like son.

This is what Michelle knows:
Peter is the type of kid who comes to school everyday looking like death warmed over, but he’s there and he aces every test without even trying. He’s the kid who’s asleep in the back of Decathlon practice. He’s the type of person that people would despise except he’s just so damn nice you can’t help but like him. Peter is safe. Peter is reliable.
Peter is Spider-Man.
She doesn’t know how to meld these concepts in her head.

Summary
“What for?” Matt sounds impatient, but Peter’s pretty sure that’s an act. Matt just doesn’t really know how to show affection.
“I had a question,” Peter starts. “About my secret identity. And your secret identity. Just—about secret identities in general, really.”
It’s really easy to forget that Matt’s blind sometimes, especially with the way he’s facing Peter right now. Feels like his gaze is boring into Peter’s skull.
“How do you know when to tell someone?” Peter blurts out.

Summary
Once May leaves, Peter looks through the viewfinder of the camera. He takes a picture of his room in the mid-afternoon light, reveling in the feeling of stillness in the world. He captures the way the sun shines onto the off-white wall, the way it reflects, the way it makes the whole area glow in a sort of ethereal way.
Yeah. He thinks he might like photography.

Summary
Peter forces himself to his feet and before he knows it, he’s in the living room, picking up the phone and putting it to his ear. “What?” he snaps.
There’s a pause. Then, “Jeez, did someone piss in your cereal this morning, or is this just good old teen angst?”
“Mr. Stark,” Peter grits out. “Why are you calling the landline?”

“Have fun last night?”
It takes a while for him to hear the words, to process that they are addressed to him. Takes him even longer to figure out who’s speaking.
“Robin?” he asks, eyes still closed.
“The one and only.” She’s angry with him, probably. He’d like to think he can tell.

Summary
There was a thorn in his father’s palm.
There was a thorn in his father’s palm, and Adam wanted to laugh, suddenly, hysterically, less out of any sort of humor and more because it was the only alternative to screaming.
Cabeswater pushed against the forefront of his mind. The sound of running water resounded in his deaf ear, like he was standing next to a stream that led to a waterfall, and the precipice was so, so near. He could hear leaves rustling and feel autumn wind. He could smell earth and dirt and grass. He wanted to sink into it.

Summary
Johnny set aside the scissors. Grabbed a clean washcloth and placed it under the sink tap. He looked at Peter, at the dark circles that stood out under his eyes. Turned off the tap. “You need to take a break,” he said, wiping the blood away from around the wound.
“I’m fine,” Peter said, wincing slightly. “It stopped bleeding a while ago.”
“Not what I meant,” Johnny replied, rinsing out the washcloth and watching the blood swirl down the drain. Red, red, red. “You look exhausted. When’s the last time you slept?”

Summary
Adam knows he picks fights too much and gets pissed off too easily and wallows in his bitterness too long. He refuses to accept any charity, even if it’s the well-meaning sort, the kind that only people who care about you can give because to them it’s just friendship. He says “no” too often. He ices people out.
Sometimes he feels like everything in him has been whittled down into sharp teeth and terrible claws and exposed bone, like he can bite and tear into everyone’s flesh, so why shouldn’t he?
Then he thinks of a too-small house, and the stench of beer, and bruises hidden under long sleeves.
It makes him want to throw up.

Summary
May lets out the longest string of curse words he’s ever heard, all mixed up in Italian and English. Somehow, they’ve closed the gap between them, and she stands in front of him, cupping his face in her shaking hands like he’s still the five-year-old that got dropped off on her doorstep in the middle of the night, and asks, “Why?”
Peter squeezes his eyes shut.
Inhales.
Exhales.
And then he starts with Ben.

Matt took another deep breath, nodded, and then nodded again. “Huh,” he said, head tilted towards the sky as if praying for guidance. “So this is what it’s like to be the voice of reason. I don’t like it.”

Summary
Johnny paused, hot dog halfway to his mouth, when Peter asked him.
“Huh?”
“Do you think people are born good and evil?” Peter repeated, legs swinging back and forth off the side of the roof they were stationed on.
Johnny took a bite of his hot dog. “I dunno, man. Why’re you asking me existential questions while I’m tryna eat a hot dog?” he asked, chewing.

May sighs. “I know something is going on with you, honey,” she says. “More than just Ben.”

“Just—I’m here, when you’re ready to talk. Okay? I’m here.”
