Summary
Kaeya is a condemned man. From a nation 500 years before known to have been destroyed, his very existence is a mistake. From a family that has discarded him just to forget his name, his living should be a blessing.
No matter where he goes, he’s reminded that he should be dead. With the tainting presence of the abyss constantly stuck to his skin, no matter how much cologne he chooses to use, no matter the scented oils or constant layers and showers, he still reeks of the scent he’s long used to associating with a home long lost. He no longer wishes to be associated with it, in fear he’ll lose himself to old memories that were meant to be discarded. Just like him.
He never expected to find solace in a man who kept the cloying presence of the Abyss and brandished said presence with pride.

Summary
In the Abyss, the only things he could rely on was his now rusting sword and how fast he could run. Then, he met Skirk. His new master had to be the only being there that wasn’t out to get him, the only one to guide him through the never ending void Ajax had walked into. The Abyss wasn’t so lonely anymore, even when that company left him bruised and bleeding and crying, he anchored onto the presence of Skirk.
Once he returned to the surface, leaving Skirk all alone and him with the family he so longed to see, his newfound power left him more lonely than he was during his time in the Abyss. With no-one stronger than him to guide him, no one to understand and challenge his strength, Ajax was lonely again, with only his rusted sword in hand.

“Let’s make a promise.” Diluc says, commanding forward Kaeya’s pinky finger once he raises his own, something Diluc was proud to take credit for. “Let’s never scare each other again, or else this will happen again, and I don’t want to ignore you again. Okay?”
Kaeya ponders again, and nods hastily with a smile. “Okay.” He reaches out his pinky finger, promising something to Diluc, and the two beam once they finish their pinky promise. Diluc scampers off again, mentioning the beverage grape juice, and Kaeya offers a happy laugh, trailing alongside him.
“I’ll never scare you again,” Diluc vows cheerily. “I’m sorry I scared you, Kaeya! I’ll never do it again! And if I do, I’ll ask you to forgive me!”

Summary
The reality of the situation only sunk in when another man let out a terrified scream at the sight of his friend bleeding from the wound in his forehead from his own doing. This was unlike a battle where the answer was to reign victorious from an enemy or an ally alike. This was unlike any battle Childe has fought before, learned about before. It was not a battle that Childe could win. There was no dying in honor with the way the man took his life, and there was no victor.
He wonders that night, restless in his sleeping chambers, how his family would react if he were to die as that man did.

“Yeah. Go along and frolic among the sand to catch crabs, now will you?” Diluc dismisses. His heart aches, and his hand clenched onto this red pigmented shell. Water laps at Diluc’s ankles, and he sighs as he looks along the horizon and away from Kaeya.
Boring, Diluc thinks, as he stares at the resemblance between the shell and him, gazing back up at Kaeya’s retreating figure and relays the words he had said. Lame.

When Kaeya finishes, Diluc stares at his braid with awe and wonderment Kaeya never had directed to him before, and Kaeya decides that he enjoys being called brother.
“Look, now we match!” Diluc cheers, eyes bright and innocent with delight. Kaeya mimics his response, hoping he looks genuine enough. “Now we really look like brothers!” Kaeya feels his heart expand with a desire for more of this brotherhood and family, eyes growing wet again. He nods aggressively, and only stops when Diluc chastises him, fearful of his braid growing loose.

Aether's gone, and so is the good-will of Lumine.
Blonde hair and gold eyes are no longer, no more is the boy who traveled for his sister, treasured and remembered only by those fortunate enough to meet him and see his virtuous goal. Perhaps in another life, Childe could have prevented this. Perhaps if Aether had done something else, Osial would not have taken his life. Maybe, just maybe, if Childe were a better man, this guilt of a benevolent boy's radiant grins forever gone would have swallowed him whole.
What-if's have never plagued Childe, only the thirst and hope of a good battle. Not until a girl so similar to Aether it aches like a nasty bruise meets him in the abyss after Aether's passing, not until the girl Aether longed infinitely to meet again had her blade skewed into Childe's flesh did he ponder on what could have gone differently had he just done something better.
