“But I,” Lance says, voice breaking. “I’m just. I don’t feel… chosen.”
“Oh,” Fernando says.
“And it’s not your fault,” Lance continues. “It’s far from it. You choose me, I know. But I just don’t feel worth it.”

“Quero te beijar,” Gabriel accidentally blurts out in a debrief, eyes still hooked to Nico’s face.
The entire room shuts up and looks at him, swallowing him whole with confused, contemplative gazes. Nico, catching Gabriel’s stare and watching him blush, asks, “What?”
“Uh,” Gabriel says. He clears his throat, awkward and embarrassed. “Sorry, I. Something in my throat. Had to, uh, clear it.” He coughs again, louder, for emphasis. “Sorry.”

Summary
What Max considers to be only a week's worth of conversation slowly turns to a month's worth, and then later, makes him glued to his phone. He messages this Joseph constantly, working hard to listen to the dangerously flirty sentences and try to match them with his own Dutch, crooked pick-up lines that he makes up as each conversation goes.
One night, Joseph accidentally sends him a voice message, voice low and hoarse, grumbling a warm, "tesoro, ti amo-" before being choked off. Max thinks he sounds eerily familiar. When he wakes up in the morning and checks the chat to listen again, the message is gone.
or Max gets Duolingo to learn Italian to try and impress Daniel, friending someone who helps him learn Italian flirting. This someone is... familiar.

“What are you doing?” Fernando asks, watching Lance rush to put his phone away.
“Nothing!” Lance says. “I was just… messaging Esteban!”
“Right,” Fernando says, dubious, narrowing his eyes. “Lancito, are you sure?”
“I’m sure, Nando,” Lance tells him. Then, to compensate, leans forward to kiss Fernando on the cheek. “Nothing else.”

Summary
“Daniel,” comes the stern voice of their pack alpha, Lewis staring him down. “Don’t.”
Daniel growls at him, tries to stop the sound from escaping. He pulls Charles closer to him, shifts them closer to the exit of the room, the other drivers still wounded from Lewis’ voice. His scent now leaks from beneath his scent patch, struggling to contain its anger and frustration. The sourness of it hits the other drivers from the way they recoil, its underlying sweetness calming Charles down as the omega tucks his nose against Daniel’s scent gland.
“I’m going to call Max,” Lewis says, trying to make himself sound threatening.
“Do it then,” Daniel bites back, and Charles follows him out, running behind.
or Daniel, Max, and Charles are all mates. The rest of the grid misunderstand them.

“You don’t get to decide that, Carlos,” Oscar says. He takes a deep breath, trying to hide the anger brewing in his lungs, frustration that feels so raw it makes his skin burn. He takes a step forward, toward Carlos, close enough that he could probably reach out to touch him. “Let’s go back to bed, hm? We can. We can talk about it later, right?”
Carlos shakes his head, but his body turns around to face Oscar, cheeks stained with tears and his eyes gloomy with red. “I am so sorry,” he says, like he had done something wrong.
“Oh baby,” Oscar whispers, cupping Carlos’ jaw, thumb brushing over his cheek, “it’s okay.”
or Logan and Oscar have pretended to be cycle partners for a while. Except, Carlos becomes Logan's real heat partner, and suddenly the world is just that bit more blurry.

“I’m sorry,” Pierre says again. “Let me make it up to you, Esteban, please-”
“With flowers?” Esteban says. “Do you think you can, can fix this relationship with flowers?”
“I’m sorry,” Pierre says, like a broken record. “C'est ma faute.”
“Oui,” Esteban blurts out, feeling the language choke him out. “You- it is all your fault.”

Then he drops his hands from his face; lets Daniel see his tears. “Do not be sorry, Daniel, because they are the little greedy cunts who just want the money- I need you, Daniel. But it is not your fault that they do not understand. That is their fault.”

Summary
Daniel decides to get a last tattoo, something to hold his body down and ground him. He keeps it to himself, a private, small tattoo etched on the most inner of his thigh, a sticker of heart with initials wrapped within it. He felt like a high schooler with a crush when he had it done, the ‘C+M’ inside the heart almost comically cliche, but he holds it there as a reminder of what he is losing and as a reminder that he will never be good enough. That he had thrown away everything for them but that he will never get them anyway.
This tattoo he will forever keep for himself (and temporarily owned by his soulmates as well).
He does not tell anyone. Not even Max, not even Charles. It just sits there, untouched by both his excessive bandages and his soulmates’ handwriting.
It just sits there.
(Almost as useless as me, Daniel thinks. Almost.)
or Daniel wants Max and Charles. Wants to ignore the call of his soulmates that litter his skin. Wants them both so badly. (But they already have each other, and his loneliness is his own fault.)
