William Wisp sure as hell didn’t know. He’d been dragged to church enough times as a kid to have a vague idea of what prayer was supposed to be. But was it prayer when he lay awake at night begging someone, anyone to listen to him? To see him? To understand?
Looking through the stained glass pane of the church, he figured that through its lens, the colors beyond weren’t always that clear. Maybe the harsh, deep red of blood didn’t look so alarming through red-tinted glass.

Anxiety made William Wisp do some pretty stupid things sometimes. He would know logically what the right or wrong thing to do was, but it was like some invisible barrier was preventing him from doing so. Or it felt like some tiny barrier was much bigger.
And that was why he was still trying to suffer through his shift at Rusty’s despite the fact that his insides actually felt like they were shredding, he couldn’t stop shaking from the pain of it all, and the dysphoria made him want to curl up in a ball and hide away somewhere where nobody could perceive him, not even himself.

He wasn’t even wearing his binder today. William had woken up, thrown on a clean shirt and then his hoodie, and ended the morning curled up on the couch as his organs seemed like they were waging war on themselves.
Everything hurt. Life is pain. William had no current intentions of leaving his spot on the couch anytime soon, not until he could even roll onto his back without the cramps getting worse. He continued to silently lament to himself, chewing on the inside of his mouth as the TV show continued to play.

“Are you sick?” The closer he looked the more he believed so was the case, by the shape of the lump under the covers she seemed to be curled up in the fetal position and her shoulders had a slight shake to them. Her natural hair was undone, kept out of her face by only a bandana. He couldn’t quite see her expression, but from leaning over she could see that her jaw was clenched.
Like the previous time she took a couple seconds to respond, her voice sounding raspy but not quite like she had a sore throat.
