Vash was just glad the people of Inepril were safe and that their plant was stable again. He’d ended his stay there on a good note, and it was one that he preferred to leave on.
If Vash got lucky, which in his experience was a very big if, they would assume he'd departed on the sand steamer instead of leaving town on foot. If they did, that would throw the insurance girls off his trail as well.
Vash really didn’t want their “twenty-four hour" surveillance. Meryl and Milly were persistent and dangerously sharp. After what they’d seen in Inepril they’d start asking questions, and they’d be questions that Vash either couldn’t or wouldn’t answer.

The Phantom Thieves have nearly secured their route through Maruki's Palace. There’s only one section left: The Twilight Corridor. A paradise where everything is perfect, and everyone is always smiling.
In order to enter that place, the Thieves must first prove they've "completed orientation" and can be "happy." There are points, there is a scoreboard, and they’re locked together in an experimental space where wishes can be granted by simply saying them aloud. Everyone has to individually earn 100 happiness points, or no one is leaving.
So what is “happiness,” really? How does Maruki define happiness? What the hell is a quantifiable happiness point? Is there any way around this? Don’t these stupid kids realize this is a trick to get them to fall back into the thrall of Maruki’s reality? And why can’t Goro earn any fucking points?
(Or: I've been watching too much Dropout Game Changer and I’ve built an Akechi torture chamber.)

For a few minutes, the world falls away. Vash is puttering around in his periphery, but Wolfwood can tune him out, narrowing his scope to nothing but the beam of his flashlight and the last bits of dirt and grit the sandstorm has thrashed his beloved bike with. He scrubs. He polishes. He resists the urge to adjust his rolled up sleeves or the jacket he’s folded into a cushion beneath him with his irrevocably dirty hands. The rhythm of the work finds him again.
And then there’s a noise. Soft, barely a catch of breath, but it lassos Wolfwood’s attention and pulls, his gaze slipping from the part he’s scrubbing to find—
Left to his own devices, Vash has assembled a tableau. The lantern’s been placed off to one side with deliberation, bathing the scenery in a low, sultry light. He’s rolled out his bedroll, shed his jacket, and bundled it with his bag to prop up his torso into an indolent sprawl across the bier he’s made for himself. His iles-long legs are spread, and he’s got one hand between them, palming teasingly over his crotch.

Nicholas D. Wolfwood is hardly what one would call a connoisseur of literature. As far as he’s concerned, it sorts itself nicely into three buckets: smart books, scripture, and drivel. He avoids the first on principle, finds himself unwillingly dragged through the second more often than not, and dabbles in the third if the fancy strikes.
The book that’s caught his eye presents a conundrum he wasn’t prepared to confront at 10 AM on a bright, already-roasting Tuesday morning. He’s been left unsupervised in a general store while Vash takes care of some do-gooder something or other, and his boredom had him gravitating to the rack of double-dime novels tucked in the back corner. The drivel selection is top-tier. Most of the books he can open at random and land on something both intriguingly salacious and horrendously written, and Wolfwood has spent a solid fifteen minutes gleefully paging through paperbacks with covers featuring washboard abs and heaving bosoms before he spots the book that’s going to ruin his life.
