Distractedly, he patted her leg. He was staring helplessly at the inside of his head, at images of Barbie, open mouthed and victimized, her face tear-stained and humiliated and very dear. He thought of the sounds she sometimes made when he was way inside her, deep sounds that came out ragged, like they’d been torn off. On a whim, he took an off road exit. Without the light from the freeway traffic, it was suddenly very dark.
“Why’d you take the exit?” asked Barbie.
“No reason. Just driving.”
